That’s 10,000 more points ($100) than the usual sign-up bonus for this card. But you’ll have to apply by June 24, 2015.
Do you know how to combine this card with other Chase credit cards to get Big Travel?
I’ll show you how to maximize the sign-up bonus. And give you tips about the best ways to use this valuable card!
Let’s Talk About the Sign-Up Bonus
Link: Chase Freedom Card
Note: If you’ve opened 5 or more new credit card accounts (with any bank!) in the past 24 months (excluding authorized user accounts), you will likely NOT be approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Ink Plus, Ink Cash, Freedom, or Slate cards. You MAY be approved for other Chase cards.
Until June 24, 2015, you will earn 20,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points when you sign-up for the Chase Freedom card and spend $500 on purchases in the 1st 3 months of opening your account.
That alone is worth $200 cash back.
One of the best things about the Chase Freedom card is its rotating quarterly 5X points categories.
For instance, from July 1, 2015, to September 30, 2015, you’ll get 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent at gas stations and Kohl’s.
You’ll earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in each quarter’s categories.
If you reach the spending threshold, that’s 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per quarter. Or $75 cash back.
Over the course of a year, that adds up to 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points (7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per quarter X 4 quarters). Or $300 in extra cash back. Not bad for a NO annual fee card!
If you get the increased sign-up bonus, meet the minimum spend, AND take advantage of the bonus categories this quarter, you’d earn at least 28,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points (20,000 point sign-up bonus + at least 500 points on $500 minimum spending + 7,500 points for spending $1,500 in the 5X categories this quarter).
That’s $280 in cash back.
Get Big Travel When You Combine With Other Chase Cards
Folks who like cash back can do well with the Chase Freedom card. But you can move your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to your Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Bold to unlock more travel options.
Great Uses for Chase Ultimate Rewards Points
Let’s go back to that 28,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points example.
Chase Travel Portal
From there, you can book flights, hotel rooms, rental cars, or activities.
28,000 points is enough to pay for $350 in travel expenses. That’s 20% more than if you redeemed the points for cash back.
Note: You can access the Chase Travel Portal with the Chase Freedom card, but you’ll only get 1 cent of value per point. Shop for travel on the portal through the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Bold cards to get the increased value.
Transfer to Travel Partners
Chase has a variety of travel transfer partners.
What Can You Get With 28,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points and Transfer Partners?
- 1 round-trip coach award flight on United Airlines to anywhere in the mainland US or Alaska (25,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points transferred to United Airlines miles)
- 6 1-way coach award flights under 650 miles on British Airways partners like American Airlines and US Airways (27,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points transferred to British Airways Avios points)
- 1 free night at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa (25,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points transferred to Hyatt points)
- 5 free nights at IHG PointBreaks hotels (25,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points transferred to IHG points)
- Flights on Southwest (depends on price of ticket, transferred to Southwest miles)
7 Amtrak 1-way tickets in the Northeast zone (28,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points transferred to Amtrak points)
- And much more!
So you can get a LOT of Big Travel by combining your Chase Freedom card with another Chase card that earns Ultimate Rewards points!
Tip for Using Your Chase Freedom Card This Quarter
The bonus categories for July 1, 2015, to September 30, 2015, are gas stations and Kohl’s stores.
Kohls.com is NOT on the Shop Through Chase shopping portal. But I searched on Cashback Monitor and found many programs where you can earn more points.
Through June 24, 2015, you’ll get 20,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($200) when you spend $500 on purchases using your new Chase Freedom in the 1st 3 months of opening your account. That’s twice the usual bonus!
That’s because you can then transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to airline and hotel partners. Or get 1.25 cents per point through the Chase Travel Portal.
