Save Money With Free Breakfast for Hilton Gold Elite Members

The $75 annual fee is NOT waived for the 1st year.

This card earns the most Hilton points for paid stays.  So it’s good for folks who spend a lot of money at Hilton hotels.

Hilton hotels include Conrad, DoubleTree, Embassy SuitesHampton InnHiltonHilton Garden InnHome2SuitesHomewood Suites, and Waldorf Astoria brand hotels.

And the American Express Hilton HHonors Surpass card can save you money, because you’ll get Hilton Gold elite status (free breakfast!).

Remember, American Express lets folks earn the sign-up bonus on personal cards just ONCE per person, per lifetime.  So if you’ve had this card in the past, you can NOT get the bonus again.

If You’ve Already Had This Card, You Can NOT Earn the Sign-Up Bonus Again

However, if you have other Hilton cards, like the American Express Hilton HHonors, Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve, or Citi Hilton HHonors, you CAN get the bonus on this card, because it’s considered a different card product.

This is a very good offer for this card!  And 85,000 Hilton points is more than enough for a night at a fancy Hilton hotel!

What Can You Get With 85,000 Hilton Points?

If you know where and when you want to travel, you can use the Hilton HHonors Point Search Tool to quickly find hotels.

Suppose you’re traveling to Amsterdam this summer.

You could stretch your Hilton points and stay 2 nights at the Hampton by Hilton Amsterdam / Arena Boulevard for 80,000 Hilton points.  It’s top-rated by TripAdvisor and includes free breakfast!

Otherwise, a paid stay would be  ~$300.  That’s a good value from 1 credit card sign-up bonus.

The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam Is Actually Six 17th Century Palaces Along a Canal

Or, you could splurge for 1 night at the excellent Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam.  Rooms here cost ~$640.  Or use 95,000 Hilton points per night.

After earning the AMEX Hilton HHonors Surpass sign-up bonus, so you’ll only need another 10,000 points for a stay.

That said, you’ll earn at least another 3,000 9,000 Hilton points from minimum spending.  And there are lots of other ways to get the extra points!

Thanks to reader Marvin for pointing out my math error!

Lots of Ways to Earn Hilton Points!

There are plenty of other ways to earn Hilton points.

You Can Transfer Points From Other Award Programs to Hilton

But I still prefer the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve card.  That’s because the sign-up bonus is 2 weekend nights at almost any Hilton after you complete minimum spending requirements.

You Could Use the Weekend Nights From the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve at the Grand Wailea in Maui

Of course, you could always get both cards!

AMEX Cards Get You Discounts!

American Express cardholders can access great deals and save money.  For example:

AMEX Offers – Getting another AMEX card gives you more opportunities to be targeted for these discounts.  And you can get the same offer on more than 1 card!

ShopRunner – You’ll get a ShopRunner membership by having an AMEX card.  This gives you free shipping from dozens of online merchants.

Small Business Saturday – Hopefully Small Business Saturday will return this year.  And having another AMEX card will get you more discounts!

Bottom Line

For a limited time, American Express has increased the sign-up bonus on the AMEX Hilton HHonors Surpass card to 85,000 Hilton points after you meet minimum spending requirements.

To see the 85,000 point AMEX Hilton HHonors Surpass application, click “What’s New” at the top left corner of the page, then scroll down to “6/15/2015 Credit Cards.”

This offer expires on July 31, 2015.

We don’t earn a commission for this card, but Emily and I will always tell you about the best deals!

My favorite Hilton card is the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve.  But the AMEX Hilton HHonors Surpass card is a good choice if you already have other Hilton cards.

  1. I *just* got this card with the 60k bonus earlier this month. Do you think there’s any way they would give me the 85k bonus instead?

  2. Since you can only get one bonus per AMEX card how dose this offer compare to other limited time offers for this card? I have had my eye on this card for a while but don’t want to get it if there might be a better offer later.

  3. “That said, you’ll earn at least another 3,000 Hilton points from minimum spending.”

At $3,000 minimum spend and 3 points per dollar on non-bonused spend, you’ll earn AT LEAST 9,000 Hilton points from minimum spend.

  4. Link to the Surpass Card App is broken. It redirects to http://www.freefrequentflyermiles.com/index.htm.

  5. Your review of the regular Hilton Hhonors Amex card from 2012 states: “Note that you can’t have both the AMEX Hilton cards open at the same time.” This post seems to suggest that you now can. I received the regular Hilton Amex card a couple of months ago and is still open. What are my chances of getting approved for the Hilton Amex Surplus card today?

  6. TJ, Yes you can get both. I just did.

  7. I have the regular American Express Hilton and the American Express Hilton Surpass / 80,000 bonus points.

  8. I just applied on line and was approved instantly.
I had been searching for a rich bonus offer with Hilton and somehow my searches did NOT lead me to this page. I already had a no cost Hilton amex card. I now have 5 amex cards that are active.

  9. Man, I got burned by Amex years ago with this card. Probably 6 years ago, got a targeted promotion to ‘upgrade’ my regular Amex Hilton to a Surpass and get 65,000 Hilton points. Trouble was, they had some very small fine print that said if you already had an Amex Hilton you’d only get the difference in bonus points between the Amex Hilton promotion and Amex Hilton Surpass, which in my case was 15,000 points. If I cancelled the Amex Hilton first and then applied for Surpass I could get the 65,000 points. And I had to pay an annual fee. I quickly cancelled the Surpass card, did not pay an annual fee and steered clear of Amex and their Hilton cards. Now, post 5/1/14, I can’t apply for either Amex Hilton card. Mega bummer, man. Moral of the story….read the teeny tiny fine print.

  10. I clicked on the link for the Hilton Amsterdam hotel and it says free hot breakfast. So you get free breakfast anyway whether you pay with the Surpass or not.
