Would You Use Your 2 Weekend Night Certificates at a Luxury Resort, Like the Waldorf Astoria in Boca Raton, Florida?

Hilton says:

Weekend night certificate is valid for twelve (12) months after the date of issuance, as noted on the certificate

And the certificates are issued after you’ve met the minimum spending requirements on the card.

Book or Stay Within 12 Months?

Million Mile Secrets reader soosie commented:

Regarding: “The certificates are valid for 12 months from the date they’re issued.”
Does that mean you have to book the room / make the reservation within 12 months OR you have to stay at the hotel within 12 months?  Thanks for any clarification!  I would hate to mess up my travel plans.

I called Hilton to clarify the terms.  The representative said:

Your stay must be completed before the expiry date on the certificate

Be Sure to Use Your Certificates (NOT Make a Booking) Before the Expiry Date!

So you can NOT make a booking within the 12 months for a stay after the certificate expires.

Can You Extend the Certificate Validity?

Million Mile Secrets reader Eric wrote:

Is there any way to extend the expiration date?  My certificates expire in June, but I’m not available to travel until July.  Is it possible to book the 2 nights for July before the certificates expire?  Or is there a way to request an extension for the certificates similar to other brands?

Your stay must occur before the certificates expire.  And Hilton says there’s NO way to extend their validity.

Use Them or Lose Them! There’s NO Way to Extend Your Certificates Beyond 12 Months From the Date

The certificates (and their expiration dates) are coded into your Hilton HHonors account.  So there’s no way around the expiration date.

Bottom Line

The improved offer on the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve card ends June 8, 2015.  You’ll earn 2 weekend nights at almost any Hilton after you spend $2,500 on purchases in the 1st 4 months of opening your account.

Plus a $100 statement credit when you spend $100+ on your 1st Hilton stay in the 1st 3 months of opening your account.

You’ll receive the certificates after you meet the minimum spending requirement.  And they’re valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

There’s NO way to extend their validity.  And your stay(s) must occur before the certificates expire.

Thanks for the questions, soosie and Eric!

  1. What about the IHG card free night? Mine was set to expire Oct. 6 this year, but I just used it to book Oct. 9 in Osaka. Is the official line that you have to book with it before the date?

  2. What happens if you cancel your CC after meeting min spend and having the certs post/issued to your Hilton acct. Are they explicitly tied to your CIti CC being open or does the relationship end once those certs are in your acct.

Basically do you need your CC from which you earned the certs to redeem the nights? Or if you have a cpl of these cards but close some, will any open Citi Hilton CC work to redeem these certs even if they weren’t earned on that particular card?

Ideally it’d be great to know if the CC isn’t required at all and the certs can be used anytime till expiration date of course, even if the card has been closed.

    Thanks!

  3. So I was just informed 2 days after my 4 month deadline that I was $3.33 short of the $2500 required spending. Didn’t realize I was looking at a total that included my annual. Any idea if I can get any leniency extension or deal to use the card a little more to get my 2 free rooms?

  4. Just got approved for the Platinum Delta American Express. With the 60,000 bonus miles and 10, 000 MQ miles. Had 4 American Express cards. So they let me cancel one of them and transfer my credit limit. Am happy going to Germany in July.

  5. Here are data points related to the Citi HHonors Reserve card:
I got my two free nights when I initially signed up for the card. I used both certificates before the one year expiration at the Conrad in NYC. I was awarded one certificate for meeting the 10K spending plus a second night for renewing the card for another year ($95). Both certificates were awarded months from each other which meant that they had different expirations. I still managed to get two nights booked at the Conrad, Koh Samui, even though one of the certificates were due to expire. Service reps will work with you if you’re personable and you will get what you want.

  6. @LionTamer – are those all useful data points? I haven’t read anywhere that there is a free night certificate for just the annual renewal fee, other than the one for the $10,000 spend. Is this undocumented and standard or did you get this through some special signup promotion?
