I wrote about my last batch of credit card applications in January and how I was unexpectedly approved for a 2nd personal Club Carlson Premier Rewards card.
This was a surprise, because US Bank is well known for being picky about approving folks who apply for lots of cards! However, freezing your ARS and IDA credit reports helps with approvals. 🙂
And it worked! I was approved for a 3rd card!
But it wasn’t an instant approval this time…
My 3rd Club Carlson Card Experiment
I wasn’t very optimistic about getting a 3rd Club Carlson Premier Rewards card, because their terms and conditions say:
Neither New Account Bonus is available to applicants who have had this Card or another Club Carlson credit card product within the last 12 months.
I figured I got lucky getting my 2nd card earlier this year. But in the interest of blog research I decided to apply again!
1. I Froze My ARS and IDA Credit Reports
Before signing-up, I froze my ARS and IDA credit reports. These are secondary credit bureaus that US Bank often checks, and they include more detailed information about your recent credit applications and history.
You can read how to freeze your ARS and IDA credit reports by mail or fax.
2. I Applied Online With My Current Club Carlson Membership Number
I signed-up for the Club Carlson Premier Rewards card and provided my current Club Carlson account number.
I was NOT instantly approved!
So I waited and in just over a week, I received an email from US Bank.
3. Approval! And a New Account Number.
US Bank emailed and said I was approved within ~9 days.
Freezing my ARS and IDA credit bureaus worked!
However, despite giving them my existing Club Carlson membership number, they created another new account for me! So now I have 3 Club Carlson accounts!
This is good (for now) because with 3 separate accounts I can book multiple rooms and get the last night free (until June 1, 2015, when Club Carlson eliminates this perk).
If I called Club Carlson to merge my 3 accounts into 1, I wouldn’t be able to book multiple rooms for the free night perk.
I got the full 85,000 Club Carlson point sign-up bonus (after meeting minimum spending) on my 2nd Club Carlson card, so I suspect I’ll get it from this card as well.
And even though Club Carlson is eliminating the last night free for cardholders on award stays of 2 nights or more (effective June 1, 2015), this is still a good card!
I’ll be keeping mine for the 40,000 Club Carlson point anniversary bonus (worth 1 night in a category 4 hotel) and free night certificate for spending $10,000 or more in a year.
I was approved for a 3rd Club Carlson Premier Rewards card. Normally, US Bank isn’t so generous with their approvals!
To improve my chances, I froze my IDA and ARS credit reports. And it worked for me!
How many Club Carlson Premier Rewards cards have you had open at once?
