  1. got the premier card a couple months ago. How likely is it that I can get the Plus card now? (I have a good credit score) Trying for companion and don’t want to apply for business card

  2. I got the premier card in December. Should I apply for both the Plus and Business cards to increase my chances of getting one of them? And if I get both, even better, right?

  3. Got the plus card in December a month after the premier. If you don’t have any chase apps in the last few months besides the other SW card you should be fine…I would go with that…the business people are usually more strict in approving.

  4. I know it’s hard to predict what Airlines and the Credit Card companies will do, but we’re almost half way through the year, so I was thinking about waiting for November/December to come around and then applying for these cards. Thus giving me Companion Pass status for the rest of 2016 and all of 2017. Feasible?

  5. It’s true that it’s unlikely to approved for both but I happened to apply for both in the same day, auto approved for another, got the dreaded “7-10” days for the other but just called customer service. They asked basics “why do you need another card, etc” and then approved me on the spot. I’m in my mid twenties with a credit score of 720 and income of 60k.

  6. Data point: I applied for two cards on Thanksgiving Day 2014. I got the personal Premier first and the personal Plus right after. I was approved for both. I also had two previous personal Chase cards (so four total) that I opened just three months prior. It’s not that hard to get approved for multiples if you have a 750+ FICO and not too many inquiries!

  7. I already have a southwest rapid rewards premier card. I just called the 866 number for chase southwest plus card and she said since I already have a southwest chase card I won’t be eligible for the bonus even though the one I have is premier and the one I want to apply is plus. Can anyone please confirm for sure if I am eligible or not to get the 50k on the plus card. Also for the companion pass, to get till end of 2017 I suppose I need to get 110k in 2016 and hence can’t apply for the plus and business premier cards before Oct 2015. Is it worth to wait that long or would the offer expire by that time..

  8. Steven Duong, yes it is, we did it. Waited until the end of September applied for one, made spending after the close date of December statement, then applied for the other card first of January, got CP end of Feb.

  9. I’ve searched on-line and can’t seem to find a conclusive answer. Can a condo homeowners association get a business credit card? I’m the treasurer for my small, 9-unit, self-managed condo HOA and a business card would really help keep expenses separate. It’s hard answering many of the business questions on the apps though given that it’s just a small HOA.

  10. @ram Rule #1 – DO NOT CALL.

  11. This may be a dumb question, but do you cancel your SW cards after you earn the companion pass…so that you can reapply and get the Companion Pass again a couple years later? Still trying to wrap my head around some of the basic “rules.”

  12. Michael Robert

I called this morning and was told the premier and the plus card are considered the same product. If you already have one then you will not get the 50K for the other. I called twice and spoke with two different reps. I got the same response both times.

  13. I just wanted to say thanks for all your articles, these are extremely helpful. Also, in reference to the Southwest offers, I wanted to let everyone know what I did for the 50,000 bonus offer back in January. Hopefully this helps someone out. Long story short I now have a companion pass good till 12/31/2016, and I didn’t even get the business card. Here is what I did.

I though it best to try a phone application first for the personal Premier card. Worst case scenario, they may give me the Plus card, but I always seem to have better luck getting the card I want when I just call in. I was approved for the personal Premier card. As soon as I hung up, I immediately submitted an online application for the Plus card and was also approved, for the exact same credit line. So I was approved for both personal cards.

Working on the software side of large companies, there are sometimes delays between the call center applications and incoming internet traffic. I could be wrong on this one, but it worked, so I figured it couldn’t hurt to share.

Also, one last note, I previously worked in the credit card industry back in college. When they ask you if you have any balance transfers during an application, never say no. If anything, say, you want to review the offer once it’s sent in the mail, and you might have something to transfer at a later time. If the company thinks you will transfer a balance to their card, they are more likely to approve you. Balance transfers turn into money on their bottom line and a steady stream of interest revenue.

  14. I applied for both premier and plus personal cards and was approved for both.
One question maybe some can answer? Aside from the original application screen, is there anywhere (either on rapid rewards or chase) that shows what your sign up bonus is?

  15. I have a personal and business plus card and have received companion pass in the past…Should I cancel both cards to get approved for the premier cards?? Or should I try to get approved for Premier while also holding the plus cards?

Any info is very much appreciated!!!

  16. Daraius,

In order to get those 6K points to make it to 110K, would one method be to get a Choice Hotels Visa(CHV), accrue points on that card, then transfer to Southwest?
The current offer on the CHV is 8K points after first purchase with card, then 24K points after first stay at a Choice Hotel.
I don’t know if these Choice Hotel points are transferable to SW and if they are 1:1.

    Anybody know?

  17. One more question.

I plan to wait to see if this SW 50k deal comes up in Q4 or this year in order to get almost 2 yrs out of the companion pass.
In order to do so, if I sign up and receive the cards in Nov 2015, do i spend any amount under $2K on each card(say I spend $1900), then right after Jan 1st of 2016, I then spend $100 to get to $2K in order for the 50K points to be credited in 2016? Thanks.

  18. Margaret Engle

I tried to sign up for the 3000 bonus points for using my premier or plus card from April to July and it wouldn’t take it. When I called in they said this offer is probably only for select individuals. I was so disappointed!

  19. so when you say
“But only if you no longer have it and you received the bonus more than 24 months ago.”
    you mean this is churn-able?

also is the 24 months from the date the bonus was posted on account? or the account opened? or the account closed.

  20. I’m in same boat as the original comment form Ethan. Got approved for a Premier card in late March and have completed the minimum spend requirements, the points should post in the next month or so.

Now considering applying for the Plus for the additional 50k. The comment from Ram is telling me not to apply. But the Companion Pass is such a tempting offer!

  21. I wasn’t sure if I’ld get the 50k bonus on both cards either. I figured it was worth a shot though. I can confirm that you can get the 50k bonus on both the plus and premier personal cards. I didn’t go the business card route.

  22. I have 50k from premier card in jan 2015. If I apply for business card now in May 2015 and get another 50k in June 2015, how long will my companion pass will be valid until.

  23. Hana, one you hit 110k pts in 2015, your CP will be valid until Dec 31st of 2016.

  24. I received the Premier card easily. My credit is over 800 (though it did bump down about 25 points after receiving the Premier card. I attempted to sign up for the Business Premier 60,000 bonus for $3000 spent in 3 months. I found that here

Unfortunately, I was not approved for the business premier card. I have a small consulting business and it is the same as my name (sole proprietorship) so maybe that’s why I got bumped. They are sending me a letter, so I will know soon.

    I have two questions:

    1. When is the best time to apply for the Southwest Plus? Should I wait a specific amount of time like 90 days?

    2. If that does not work, can a spouse apply for a card and associate the card with the other spouse’s Southwest Rapid Rewards ID?

  25. Durbash you are doing a great disservice to all your readers around the globe by not replying to their questions. I see questions from a month ago here still not answered. It is not like this one other point sites I visit. As such, I plan not to return here.

  26. I have to agree with Chen. I’ve been waiting for you (Darius) to weigh in on the commentary from May 13-14 (and continuing since then) as to whether the PLUS and Premier cards are considered the same product or if each can qualify for a separate sign up bonus, but the silence from you (Darius) on this oft repeated question (and all the others posted in this string!) has been deafening. Are you ever going to respond to these questions? I’ve posted questions two others times on your blog and never had a response. I would echo Chen’s comments that I don’t experience that on other blogs. What gives?

  27. @ Jerry — Signup for the PLUS card for the 50K if you can find a referral since it;s only offering 25K at this time. Both the Premier and Plus cards will go towards your companion requirements.
I applied for each of them a week apart — one over the phone and the other via the link. I don’t believe it matters either way.

The best time to apply for the cards are in November so that you hit your 2K spending mark (ensure your monthly statement) posts with the final 2K spent in January. This way you qualify for companion for 2 complete years. It may take another month as it did me for the 50K to post. Other posts have mentioned do not spend a lot the last week because the charges haven;t cleared.

  28. I applied for the Premier and Plus cards in May (each with 50K bonus) and got approved for both. I hit my spend limit in June for the Premier and the 50K bonus transferred to my account. This month, I hit the spend limit for the Plus card, but did not receive the 50K bonus when the points transferred. What would you recommend for my next course of action? Call, email, live chat?

Is it true that Chase is now considering the Plus and Premier as one product as Michael Robert mentioned above? Anyone else run into this?

  29. I have referrals for the 50K bonus when you get a Southwest Airlines Plus Credit Card.

You have to spend $2000 in 3 months.
You receive 3000 bonus points on your CC anniversary

This offer was sent to me to hand out to my friends and family.
If you want to be my friend and use this offer
    Email me at [email protected].

    Offer expires 09/30/2015

  30. I want the 50,000 bonus points to post after January 1st of 2016 so I can start earning points towards a companion pass in 2016. Should I wait until October 1st to apply? Or can I safely apply now because there’s a 6-8 week delay after the 3 months of spending $3000 in order to get the points posted to your Rapid Rewards account?

  31. I was just told by 2 southwest customer service representatives that the 50K bonus does not count toward Companion status. Can someone confirm this?

  32. If anyone would like a referral to get the Southwest Premier card with the 50,000 miles bonus, please drop me an email at

    chargermike21 at

They sent me cards in the mail to give out to friends and family which contain all of the info you need to get started. I have taken a picture of the card and will send it in a reply email so you can apply immediately and not wait the 7 days it takes for the on-line referral. The offer is good until Sept. 30, 2016

Thanks to everyone!! My kids are going to enjoy the vacation we get to take with your help!!

  33. I have a few referrals for both the Southwest PLUS and PREMIER w/ 50,000 Rapid Rewards point. The chase website is only offering 40,000 points. Please email me at phu_anny at for the referral link or you have any questions!

  34. This post is terribly inaccurate. The bonus points DO NOT count 1:1 toward your companion pass. You can earn a MAXIMUM of 15,000 TIER QUALIFYING POINTS from this card, per year. Your other points can be redeemed for award travel. THEY DO NOT GET YOU THE COMPANION PASS.
I am surprised no one has found this out the hard way and asked for a retraction!
