  1. Can tickets brought this way be changed or even canceled? Is there a penalty or cost?

  3. I’m surprised you didn’t mention that you could use Avios to fly on AA for the same number of miles, thus giving you even more options for departure cities. You can fly out of LA, SFO and Phoenix.

  4. Great tips. Thanks for sharing.

  5. The reality is anyone one on the west coast have a better selection of milesaver awards when going to Hawaii. In your example you use a family of 4 but on dates that the kids would be in school. The airlines really limit milesavers awards for more than 1 or 2 during school breaks. Also if you do this from your AUS, you would still be using 22,500 Avios each way, same as AA points.

  6. We live in San Diego and have used Alaska here and AA in Los Angeles to fly to Hawaii (all islands) using Avios for the last 5 years. 100,000 miles for the 4 of us each time. Every year, the kids were out of school, summer vacation. You have to plan in advance and keep checking for availability. Don’t think it’s hopeless in the Summer. And don’t forget to ask Alaska to waive the booking fee over the phone. They will since you cannot book Alaska on-line using Avios.

  7. These tickets can be cancelled very cheaply by calling britishairways at least 24 hours prior to departure. They penalize you the taxes which is about $5 each way and redeposit the points.

Availability is actually pretty descent for a family of 4 in economy, if there’s some flexibilty you can definitely make it work.

I also realize AA does these flights as well but I wanted to focus on Alaska since you are able to see AA flights when using britishairways searches but it does not show Alaska flights yet you are able to book them as well.

  9. Hi, and thanks for this post! Do they have to be SAAVER awards in order for you to be able to use british airways avios for them?

Also, lets say were a family of five, do all 5 tickets need to be available by SAAVER? Or would just a couple seats avialable open up the ability to book via BA Avios?

  10. Recently I could not find availability on BA from LAX to Hawaii because now most of the time AA don’t have direct flight from LAX to Hawaii for Economy Saver Award thus you could not book BA for 25k trip.

  11. I’m not seeing an option for “redeem miles” on the site as of today. Is there another way? If so, what? I’d love to take the family to Hawaii with the 100k avios we have banked. Please help. Thanks.
