  1. Without Bacon

Darius – How does the 35% Gold bonus get applied? You’ve applied it to the entire 70 points/dollar in your example. But Lucky says it only applies to the base 20 points/dollar, not the bonus for the 3x promo or for being a Gold member.

    So in your example, the person is earning 94.5 points/dollar (20 base + 40 3x promo + 10 gold, all times 35%), whereas Lucky has them earning 77 points/dollar (20/dollar base + 7 (at 35% of base) + 10 (Gold) + 40 (3x bonus))

  2. Way to put a positive spin on this but reality is they really devalued their card. More reason to pass it up……..besides it was one of the harder cards for churners to get an approval.

  3. There is a foreign transaction fee for these cards, how do you book an oversea hotel and avoid the fee? Or do you think the fee is worth it for the bonus points?

  4. I agree with Gary. What a terrible devaluation. Club Carlson has been my number one card for all my daily spending needs for the past 2 years because of it’s superior reward benefits that were offered. Now with this new change, it is no longer far superior to any of my other card choices I have to use. If fact, I can think of a few that are likely better. Such a sharp devaluation of the rewards program in such an abrupt time frame is very disappointing. 1 free night per year for $10,000 spend on the card? Could they not have made this change for all future card members and kept the program in place for past loyal members? Or at least could they not have reduced the number of bonus free nights from unlimited to let’s say, 8 or 5 days per year? Could they not have at least given 6 months for this change to occur instead of less than 60 days? This is a drastic change to the program. Because of this, I will no doubt have to reassess the value I place on my Club Carlson Visa and review my alternative choices to use for my future daily spending needs. In my opinion, this program has gone from top notch to less than average.

  5. Seems like too much work to keep this card at least for me. I’m using my points and cancelling and replacing it with a Hyatt or IHG!
