You can use a credit card to pay your taxes directly, but the services charge processing fees of up to 2.35%.  But in certain circumstances it could make sense to pay the fees!

Pay 1040 is 1 of these cheapest and charges 1.87%.  Don’t worry, you will NOT have to pay cash advance fees!

So is it worth paying this fee to settle your tax bill  using the US Bank Club Carlson card?  Let’s take a look!

2 Free Nights at Top Club Carlson Hotel

Let’s say you have a $10,000 tax bill.  If you paid through Pay 1040 with your US Bank Club Carlson card, it would cost:

  • $10,187 ($10,000 tax bill x 1.87% = $187)

And you’ll get 5X points.  Because your Club Carlson card earns 5 Club Carlson points per $1 spent.  So you’d earn:

  • 50,935 Club Carlson points ($10,187 payment for taxes & processing fees x 5 Club Carlson points per $1 spent everywhere)

You can use your credit card to pay your taxes by using a processing service.  Pay 1040 charges a 1.87% fee.  So this is only a good deal under certain circumstances.

If you use the US Bank Club Carlson card to pay a $10,000 tax bill you’ll earn ~50,000 Club Carlson points.  That will get you for 2 free nights at a Category 6 hotel.

And if you pay a $5,000 tax bill, you’ll earn ~25,000 Club Carlson points or enough for 2 free nights at a Category 2 hotel.  Or you could earn another easy 3,000 Club Carlson points for 2 free nights in a Category 3 hotel.

This is a fantastic deal that could save you hundreds of dollars on your next hotel stay.  But keep in mind, Club Carlson doesn’t have as many locations as other hotel chains like Hilton.  So check Hotel Hustle or Award Mapper to see if a there is a Club Carlson hotel that fits into your travel plans!

  1. @Darius, if you’re expecting a tax refund, can you overpay your taxes and still take advantage of this? The overpayment would likely be refunded with the rest of your expected return, yeah?

  2. @raj. I think you can do that if you were to make a quarterly tax payment during the year. I don’t think you can prepay after the year is over.

  4. I have both a Club Carlson card and a Fidelity AMEX card which pays 2% cashback. Is the club Carlson still a better deal at 5 points per dollar? What is the cash value of the Club Carlson rebate?

    If you have rental property, you can do even better. Pay the property taxes for your rentals using the card (many local tax agencies now accept credit cards), and the bank fee (about $220 on a $10,000 payment; varies slightly by tax agency) is a tax deductible expense on Schedule E. Sweet. London, here I come!!!!
