A few months ago, I wrote that you could use your American Express Membership Rewards for Airbnb gift cards.
And now through March 31, 2015, you’ll get a 25% bonus.
But is this a good deal?
How to Get the 25% Bonus on Airbnb Gift Cards
You can usually redeem 10,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points for a $100 Airbnb gift card. But according to One Mile at at Time, if you redeem your points by March 31, 2015, you’ll get a $125 Airbnb gift card.
Cards that earn AMEX Membership Rewards points include:
|Personal Cards||Business Cards|
|Premier Rewards Gold Card From American Express||The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN|
|American Express® Mercedes-Benz Platinum||The Blue for Business® Credit Card from American Express|
|The Platinum Card® from American Express||The Enhanced Business Platinum Card® from American Express OPEN|
|AMEX EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express||Business Green Rewards Card from American Express OPEN|
|AMEX EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express|
|American Express® Gold Card|
|American Express® Green Card|
|Blue from American Express® Note: These are the ONLY AMEX cards that earn Membership Rewards points that can NOT be transferred to airline & hotel programs. But you can use these points on the Membership Rewards website for other redemptions. Includes personal AND small business versions of the card.|
To get the 25% bonus, just log into your AMEX Membership Rewards account.
And select Airbnb from the drop down menu.
The discount will automatically show up on your account.
Important Terms & Conditions:
- You can only purchase Airbnb gift cards in 2 denominations. A $125 (normally $100) gift card costs 10,000 points. And a $313 (normally $250) gift card for 25,000 points
- You should receive your Airbnb gift card via email usually within 3 hours but it could take up to 1 business day
- Only 1 gift card per booking
- Airbnb gift cards can NOT be combined with other discounts or promotional codes
Is This a Good Deal?
With this deal you’ll get a $313 Airbnb gift card for 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points. That’s a value of 1.25 cents per point ($313 gift card / 25,000 points).
If you’re new to Airbnb you might do better by saving $50 on your 1st stay with my referral link (but you can NOT combine this with the gift card deal).
I prefer to transfer my AMEX Membership Rewards points to 1 of their travel partners for Big Travel!
AMEX has these airline partners
|American Express Membership Rewards Airline Transfer Partners|
|ANA||Asia Miles||British Airways|
|Delta Airlines||El Al||Emirates|
|Etihad||Flying Blue (Air France / KLM)||Hawaiian Airlines|
|Virgin America||Virgin Atlantic|
and hotel partners to choose from.
|American Express Membership Rewards Hotel Transfer Partners|
For example, you could transfer your AMEX Membership Rewards points to British Airways. Then use 25,000 British Airways Avios points (and ~$6 in tax & fees) for a 1-way coach flight from Miami to Dusseldorf, Germany, on Air Berlin.
Note: Starting October 1, 2015, the new transfer ratio will be 250 AMEX Membership Rewards points : 200 British Airways Avios points. Or 5:4.
Previously, the ratio was 1:1 with transfers in 1,000 point increments.
That’s almost $700 more in value ($1,000 1-way award flight to Germany – $313 Airbnb gift card) for your 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points!
That said, the 25% bonus may be a good deal for folks who want to avoid the major hotel chains and like to save on stays in unique locations.
hrough March 31, 2015, you can get a 25% bonus when you redeem your American Express Membership Rewards points for Airbnb gift cards. Or, if you’ve never used Airbnb, you could save $25 on your 1st stay with my referral link (but you can’t combine these deals)!
I prefer to use my AMEX Membership Rewards points with airline and hotel partners. That’s because you can get much more value from of your points!
However, the 25% bonus could be a good deal for some.
