Two weeks ago, I posted about some really HOT United Airlines fares from Europe for under $100!  And thousands of folks were able to get in on this deal.  Unfortunately, United Airlines decided NOT to honor these mistake fares.

Many folks were upset and filed complaints with the US Department of Transportation.  And the DOT has released their decision

Many folks were upset when United Airlines decided not to honor their tickets.  And because the Department of Transportation’s rules say any ticket booked to or from the US can’t be changed in price after someone has paid for it in full, they filed complaints.

The US DOT has determined that United Airlines will NOT be required to honor the mistake fares.  According to the letter they released:

Consistent with the Office’s treatment of fare advertisements and disclosure of baggage fees, it does not intend to enforce the rule in question (the post purchase price increase prohibition) when the fare offer is not marketed to consumers in the United States.

Additionally, the Office is concerned that to obtain the fare, some purchasers had to manipulate the search process on the website in order to force the conversion error to Danish Krone by misrepresenting their billing address country as Denmark when, in fact, Denmark was not their billing address country.  This evidence of bad faith by the large majority of purchasers contributed to the Enforcement Office’s decision.

So no amazingly cheap First and Business Class paid flights for us!

What Now?

You should receive a refund from United Airlines.  If not, contact United Airlines at 800-864-8331.

You win some and you lose some in this game.  Not all mistake fares are honored, that’s why you should NOT book non-refundable hotels, activities, etc.

But it’s worthwhile to try to book these fares!  That’s because some mistakes fares do work out, like the cheap flights to Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi, I told you about around Christmas!

Bottom Line

The US Department of Transportation has determined that United Airlines will NOT be required to honor the mistake fares from Europe.  You should receive a refund for your flight.  And hopefully you didn’t book any nonrefundable hotel stays, transportation, or activities!
