I wrote earlier today that Evolve Money would soon be charging a 3% fee for some debit cards, including gift cards and prepaid cards.

According to Doctor of Credit, Evolve Money is currently not charging a fee for credit cards!  Normally the fee is 3%.

Right Now You Can Pay Bills Using Evolve Money for Free!

I suspect this is a temporary glitch as they update their systems in preparation for next week’s changes.  So it probably won’t last long!

What’s the Deal?

I tested Visa and MasterCards from Barclaycard, Chase, Citi, and US Bank with Evolve Money’s bill pay service, and all of these cards were accepted without a fee.

That said, there’s no way of knowing when Evolve Money will re-instate the 3% fee.  Or whether they can add the fee at a later time even after your card has been charged.

The maximum bill payment amount is $999.  So some folks might consider pre-paying large bills like utilities or loans to take advantage of the free miles and points.

You Could Make Several Months of Bill Payments in Advance to Earn Miles and Points

But this is risky!  If they add the fee at a later time you could be on the hook for more cash.

So do NOT do it if you’re not willing to accept that you might pay the fee after all.

Again, this appears to be a temporary glitch so if you want to try it out, I would NOT wait.

Bottom Line

Evolve Money is currently not charging a 3% fee for credit card transactions.

This is likely a temporary glitch as they update their systems, because next week they’ll start charging 3% for some debit and gift cards.

You could pre-pay bills to a maximum of $999 if you want to take advantage of the fee-free miles and points!  But be aware that they might be able to add the fee at a later time.

So don’t do it if you’re not willing to accept some risk.
