UPDATE: The Chase Sapphire Preferred no longer earns 3X points on the 1st Friday of the month.
It’s the 1st Friday of the month, which means you earn more points for dining when you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card!
Typically, you earn 2X Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on dining, but today you’ll earn 3X points.
However, if you plan on visiting Starbucks, you’ll earn more points with the Chase Freedom card.
I’ll show you how to get the most out of the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s 1st Friday!
How to Make 1st Friday Even Tastier!

Double Dip! Double Dipping is when you combine 2 promotions to earn more points.
You can combine the 3X points you earn for 1st Friday with dining Rewards Network. It’s free to register for a Rewards Network and you’ll earn up to 5X points when you dine at participating restaurants, night clubs, and bars.
So when you combine 1st Friday and Rewards Network you can get a total of up to
If you don’t earn or use points (within a certain time), some airline & hotel programs will delete the points you have!
So getting points for dining with Rewards Network can keep your airline and hotel points from expiring. Or you can transfer the points you earn with your Chase Sapphire Preferred to airline or hotel programs you want to keep active.
For example, Hilton points expire if you don’t use or earn points for 12 months. So getting even a few points for an inexpensive meal will save your Hilton points.
How the Bonus Points Stack Up
Here’s how many points you could earn:
- 120 Chase Ultimate Rewards points (3X points for using the Chase Sapphire Preferred card x $40 restaurant bill)
- 120 United Airlines miles (3X points for using Rewards Network x $40 restaurant bill)
You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United Airlines at a 1:1 ratio. This means you will earn a total of:
- 240 United Airlines miles (120 points transferred from Chase + 120 miles from Rewards Network).
240 United Airlines miles may not seem like much, but it’s a nice bonus for doing an activity you planned on doing anyway!
Just Use Your Card!
To earn 3X points on 1st Friday, you don’t need to register or show a coupon. Just pay with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card at a restaurant and you’ll automatically earn 3X points per dollar.
1st Friday Is NOT Just for Restaurants & Food
You can earn 3X points at more than just restaurants today!
Many bars, pubs, and night clubs that serve food are also categorized as dining. But keep in mind, Chase has the final say on what counts!
You also don’t have to order food! Your purchase is categorized based on where you make your purchase NOT what you purchase. So you can order drinks and still earn 3X points.
You can also earn bonus points for buying gift cards from a restaurant instead of dining.
It’s 1st Friday No Matter Where You Are
Are you traveling outside the US? You can still earn 3X points on dining today and the Chase Sapphire Preferred does NOT charge foreign transaction fees.
Get More Bonus Points at Starbucks With Chase Freedom
If you have plans to visit Starbucks today, you can earn more points by paying with your Chase Freedom card.
Through March 31, 2015, you get 5X points at Starbucks (also grocery stores and movie theaters) when you use the Chase Freedom card. Just make sure you activate this offer by March 14, 2015.
Keep in mind that you only get 5X points on up to $1,500 in all bonus categories. So the maximum points you can earn is 7,500 Chase points ($1,500 maximum spending x 5 points per dollar). You can use these points for $75 cash back.
Chase Freedom points don’t transfer to airlines and hotels. But there is a way around that. You can transfer your Chase Freedom points to your Chase Sapphire Preferred card, (no longer offered) Chase Ink Bold or Chase Ink Plus, and from there transfer to a partner airline or hotel.
It’s the 1st Friday of the month. So you will earn 3X points per dollar spent on dining with the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
Sign-up for free at Rewards Network to earn up to 5X additional points when you dine at a participating
restaurant, bar, or nightclub.
By combining these deals you could earn up to 240 airline or hotel points when you spend $40. That’s a nice bonus if you already have plans to dine out today, but I wouldn’t go out of my way just to get the 3X points.
