Million Mile Secrets reader Bert commented:

I came across this promotion offering Southwest Rapid Rewards points for purchasing MGM Resorts gift cards.  Any idea if the points would count toward a Companion Pass?

How long do these promotions typically run for?  And how long for the points to post?  At any rate, it could be a good opportunity for your readers (like me) who like Vegas!

Southwest often runs promotions through which you can earn bonus frequent flyer points.  Until January 15, 2015, you can earn up to 6,000 points when you buy an MGM Resorts gift card.

But will these points count toward the Southwest Companion Pass?

What’s the Deal?

In my experience, BONUS points earned from Southwest promotions typically do NOT count toward the Southwest Companion Pass.  But the regular points you earn from spending money generally DO count.

For example, the bonus points for new members who join the Southwest Rapid Rewards dining program do NOT count toward the Companion Pass. But points earned from eating at restaurants DO count.  (This promotion is expired.)

There was also a Rocketmiles promotion where folks earned 3,000 bonus Southwest points on their 1st booking.  Those bonus points did NOT count either (but regular points earned from hotel stays did count).

Confused About Which Points Count Toward the Southwest Companion Pass?

However, we spoke with a Southwest representative and they confirmed that the points earned from the MGM Resorts gift card deal WILL count toward Southwest Companion Pass status!

Here’s how it works with the MGM deal:

  • Buy a $100 MGM gift card – earn 1,200 Southwest points
  • Buy a $250 MGM gift card – earn 3,000 Southwest points
  • Buy a $500 MGM gift card – earn 6,000 Southwest points

You can earn a maximum of 24,000 Southwest points per account.

This could be a good deal if you plan to stay at an MGM Resort in Las Vegas anyway.  But I wouldn’t change my travel plans just to earn bonus points!

Strangely, there’s no field on the gift card order page to enter your Southwest Rapid Rewards number!

Where Do You Enter Your Southwest Account Number?

So we called Southwest and asked how the points would be credited.  The representative said that you’d get the points if you signed-in to your Southwest account 1st, then navigated to MGM gift cards from the Southwest promotions page.  She also said folks could always call Southwest customer service at (800) 435-9792 if for some reason the points don’t post.

Note:   It can take 6 to 8 weeks for points from Southwest promotions to appear in your account.  That said, in my experience it usually only takes ~ 1 to 2 weeks (like when I ordered flowers and gifts to re-qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass!).

How to Tell If Points Count Toward the Companion Pass

If you’re not sure if points from a Southwest promotion will count toward the Companion Pass, it’s always safest to call Southwest at (800) 435-9792 to confirm.

To see if points you’ve already earned will be credited to your Companion Pass status, sign-in to your Southwest account and navigate to “My Rapid Rewards.”

In the “Rewards Activity Details” section, there’s a pull-down menu where you can select “Companion Pass Qualifying Points.”

You Can View Transactions That Counted Toward the Southwest Companion Pass

This way, you can double-check that you got credit for points you’ve earned!

Bottom Line

You can earn bonus Southwest points when you buy MGM Resorts gift cards until January 15, 2015.

In general, BONUS points from these deals do NOT count toward the Companion Pass.  Points earned from spending money through these promotions usually do count.

  1. Who is your Southwest rep? My promotion points do not count towards the companion pass. Others posted same on FT.

  2. Further, the promotion link is no longer there. I guess valid to January 15 was Southwest’s “estimate”??!!!?!! It took 4 days for my points to post.

  3. When I link to the Southwest promotions, I do not see this offer. Is it a targeted offer, or is it available for everyone? Since I am going to be staying at an MGM property in a few months, and since I am working towards a companion pass, I would like to purchase this, but I want to be sure that I do it correctly.

  4. One more thing–the only other mention I could find of this offer was about a month old, so is it possible that it is no longer available? And FYI–on that thread, it stated “I just went to buy 2 $500 gift cards, they charge a $2.95 card fee per card, a $4.99 shipping fee, and a $45 dollar convenience fee.”

  5. The offer is not available any longer. Wasn’t available at the time of this post. And the points don’t count towards companion pass anyway.

  6. I did the Rocketmiles promo when it was at 5,000 bonus points. I was credited for those bonus points and all 6,000 (1000 for the room) counted towards a companion Pass. This was in November 2014.

  7. Hello, I’m not seeing it in my Southwest offers either. 🙁

  8. IMPORTANT- i just read where the gift cards can be used and paying for hotels is not one of them:

Where can I use my Gift Card?

The MGM Resorts International Gift Card is accepted at participating destinations’ merchant and restaurant outlets listed here. The Gift Card cannot be used to make reservations or advance purchases, such as show tickets or room reservations.

Gift Cards may not be used for gaming activities, hotel reservations, or advanced purchases, and are not redeemable for cash. See the Cardholder Agreement for a complete list of terms and conditions.

  9. After I earn companion status collecting 110 K, can I transfer more UR to SW and still book companion ticket?

  10. Thanks for the response to my questions, Daraius!

I can answer a few of the readers other questions as I did buy a few of the gift cards and have used them. My points did post between 2 and 3 weeks after I purchased the cards however the points were backdated to the purchase date and since I bought them in December they didn’t count toward the pass I plan to earn this year. The value of the SW points does more than cover the exorbitant fees they charge but the $500 card gives you more bang for the buck than the $100 card when the fees are factored in. You can use the card to pay for your room, just not to reserve one, you have to use a credit card for that. When you check out go to the front desk and tell them you want to pay with the gift card and they will refund any reservation charges that were on the credit card. I’ve heard you can use the card to pay at most mlife restaurants and bars directly but it is easiest to charge everything to your room and take care of it all at once at the end of your stay.

Unfortunately I don’t see it anymore but hopefully it comes back sometime!

  11. I don’t see this offer either. I did find out that the points from e-rewards count towards the companion pass! I had over $100 in “e-rewards currency” which was 2,400 points and it did count towards the companion pass. I had been told that it didn’t, so was very happy!

  12. I am a newbie. I’ve my personal southwest card for almost 3 years now. What should I do to get a companion pass? Should I cancel the card or just go ahead and reapply? If I do have to cancel it how long do I have to wait until I can re-apply? Thank you so much.

  13. Can someone tell me that if I earn the companion pass, can it be applied to flight that is already booked? I.e reduce the points I’ve already paid??

  14. Jeremiah,
Yes, If you already have a flight booked and earn the CP beforehand, you can add a companion. If you’ve already bought two tickets, call SW and cancel the second/add your companion at the same time.

  15. Jerimiah, yes…. Once you get the companion pass you can add a person to any flight you have booked. If you booked your wife or someone else you may have to call sw customer service to get them cancel the flight you paid for the companion with points, then you can easily add a companion to your flight.
Since the link to the mgm deal is not on rapid rewards im not sure if its still valid.

  16. Any update on whether we can still get in on this?

  17. Yeah, would like an update as to whether this is still available. The link to the promotion works, however there is nothing on the promotions page that says anything about the program. Also like he said above, there is no place to enter your RR# on the page. I have an email into southwest currently asking them for clarity as to whether this promotion is still going on.

  18. Ben-if you hear anything from Southwest, let us know. I posted a question on the contact page for Million Mile Secrets, but I am not hopeful about getting a response before the theoretical deadline.

  19. Received email from Southwest:

“Thank you for contacting us. We are forwarding your e-mail to our Customer Relations Department for further review. You should expect a response to your concern within seven to ten days, and we’ll do our best to get back to you as soon as possible. We certainly appreciate your patience.”

I don’t think I will hear back before the 15th.
