The Chase Freedom is 1 of my favorite cards.  That’s because it charges NO annual fee and you can earn 5X points in rotating categories every 3 months.

If you spend the maximum of $1,500 on 5X points categories each quarter, you can earn 30,000 points (7,500 points x 4 quarters) or $300 in cash back per year.

And you can transfer the points you earn to cards such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Bold, or Chase Ink Plus.  That allows you to then transfer to airline and hotel partners for Big Travel such as Business Class flights on United Airlines.

I’ve had the Chase Freedom card for years, and have no plans to cancel it.  Hanging on to a no annual fee card can help you build strong relationships with banks and improve your credit score!

If you don’t already have the Chase Freedom card, you can sign-up and earn 10,000 points ($100 in cash back) when you spend $500 within the 1st 3 months.

Bottom Line

You have until March 14, 2015, to register your Chase Freedom card and earn 5X points at grocery stores, Starbucks, and movie theaters.

You’ll earn 5X points on up to $1,500 in spending through March 30, 2015.

  1. Do I also earn 5x points when I buy master card gift card or is it just for buying restaurant and clothing stores (and others that you have mentioned) gift cards? TIA.

  2. Hi Darius,

I don’t have a Chase Sapphire Preferred, Ink Bold and Ink Plus card. What do I do with Freedom Rewards Points?

    Thanks,
    Tsui

  3. i prefer to buy such gift cards from resellers like raise or carpool as discounts are much higher than the 5x points. Usually 10+%. Makes sense to buy ones like target, whole foods etc which usually don’t have high discounts in resale.

  4. Taking a trip in August to France and Italy. Leaving Miami, FL and wanting to visit Florence & Rome and then move on to Paris & the countryside. Any tips on best first class seats to get over there and back? Best way to get those seats? THANKS!

  5. My problem is always with the definition of “grocery store”. What I view as a grocery store may not be what Freedom recognizes as such. Do you have a few well-known grocery stores that (1) are confirmed to be recognized by Freedom, and (2) sell gift cards? Thanks!

  6. @HS yes, for master/visa GC too. Good thing about Freedom card is that as soon as the charge is posted, you can see how much points you got out of it (by clicking on transaction details).
