If you fly Delta, you might be happy today. Because you can now book 1-way award tickets! Until now, Delta only allowed round-trip awards, so this is a nice change!
There are other changes to their frequent flyer program which some folks might be displeased with. For example, you can no longer have a free stopover on award tickets.
They’ve also changed how folks earn and redeem miles. I like that their award search is much easier to use!

Until now, Delta only allowed round-trip award tickets. So even if you only wanted to fly 1-way, you’d have to pay the round-trip price!
I checked 1-way flights from Austin to New York in February, and it’s working! A 1-way, coach class domestic ticket works out to 12,500 miles and ~$6.
Delta also promised they’d have more available low level award seats. They now have 5 award levels, with level 1 being the cheapest. Until now, they’ve had 3 levels (saver, standard, and peak).
I searched for 1-way tickets to Hawaii in March, and there were still a number of dates left at the lowest saver level (22,500 miles). And lots of seats at level 2 (27,500 miles).
Folks traveling from Europe on 1-way tickets will still pay fuel surcharges (because Delta always added fuel surcharges for flights originating in Europe). But if you book a round-trip originating in the US, you won’t be charged.
Let’s hope Delta continues to have more award seats available. I’m looking forward to (finally) using some Delta miles on 1-way tickets!
Delta made big changes to their frequent flyer program starting January 1, 2015.
Most folks will be happy that you can now book 1-way award tickets! And so far, it looks like there are more award seats available with their new award chart. But I’ve only checked a few destinations.
How do you feel about the new Delta SkyMiles program?
