You can get a 40% bonus when you transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to British Airways Avios until January 31, 2015.
These bonuses don’t happen very often. It’s been over a year since American Express has had a British Airways transfer bonus.
This is a very good deal! Especially for folks who use their British Airways Avios points for award tickets on partners, such as short-haul, domestic flights on American Airlines, US Airways, or Alaska Airlines.
You’ll get 1,400 Avios points for every 1,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points you transfer.
And with this bonus, you could get a domestic round-trip, coach class ticket for just 7,000 points. I’ll show you how!
What’s the Deal?
You’ll get 1,400 British Airways Avios points for every 1,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points you transfer, until January 31, 2015.
Normally, the transfer ratio is 1:1. And you can only transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points in 1,000 point increments.
You could use British Airways Avios points for flights on British Airways, but you’ll (usually) pay hefty fuel surcharge. For example, a round-trip coach class ticket on British Airways from New York to London, UK, costs 40,000 Avios points and $694 in fees!
A much better use of Avios points is for flights on partner airlines like American Airlines, US Airways, and Alaska Airlines.
Because British Airways uses a distance-based award chart, you’ll only pay 4,500 Avios points 1-way for domestic partner flights under 650 miles. That’s 9,000 points round-trip.
With the American Express Membership Rewards transfer bonus, you could transfer 7,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points and get 9,800 British Airways Avios points (7,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points x 1.4).
And that’s more than enough for a domestic, coach class round-trip ticket!
What Other Deals Can You Get With the Bonus?
Another great deal with British Airways Avios is for flights from the west coast to Hawaii. Because their award chart is distance based, you’ll only pay 12,500 Avios points each way (25,000 British Airways Avios points round-trip) for a coach class award ticket to Hawaii on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines.
You could transfer 18,000 American Express Membership Rewards points with the 40% transfer bonus, and get 25,200 British Airways Avios points. Then use them for a round-trip ticket on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines from the west coast to Hawaii!
You can’t get a round-trip ticket to Hawaii any more cheaply than that!

And here’s a great way to stack this bonus.
You could get a round-trip, coach class domestic short haul flight by spending only ~$1,556 at the supermarket.
That’s because the American Express EveryDay Preferred card gets you 4.5 points per $1 you spend at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 in spending per year), if you make 30 or more transactions in a billing period.
So by spending ~$1,556, you’ll earn ~7,000 American Express Membership Rewards points (~$1,556 in spending x 4.5 points per $1). And you could then transfer those points to British Airways with the 40% bonus and get 9,800 Avios points.
So if you’re short on American Express Membership Rewards points, you could do some shopping in advance to earn enough points for a round-trip flight with this transfer promotion.
This is a great deal! And it doesn’t come around very often.
Folks who use British Airways Avios points for short-haul, domestic flights on American Airlines, US Airways, or Alaska Airlines could do very well with this promotion. You could get a round-trip domestic flight for 7,000 points!
And there are lots of ways to earn American Express Membership Rewards points.
How will you make the most of the AMEX British Airways transfer bonus?
