Via MileCards, The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN is making some changes on January 23, 2015, that in turn could change how you earn points!
I’ll explain what’s changed and how it might impact you.
3 Changes to The Business Gold Rewards Card From American Express OPEN
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Choose Your Own Bonus Category
So I’ll give you the good news first.
With The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN you can currently earn 3X points on flights purchased directly from airlines. But starting January 30, 2015, you can earn 3X points in any 1 of the following categories:
- Flights purchased directly from the airlines
- US Advertising in select media
- Shipping purchased in the US
- US Gas Stations
- OR directly from US locations of certain computer hardware, software, and cloud computing stores
The categories you don’t select will then earn you 2X points per dollar spent.
You can choose your 3X point category beginning January 30, 2015. Starting in 2016, the selection period will be from December 1st to January 31st.
Once you choose your 3X points category, you won’t be able to make changes until the following year.
This change is great news for folks who like The Business Rewards Gold Card from American Express OPEN, but don’t do a lot of spending on flights. Now you have more options and the opportunity to earn more points!
2. Separate Rewards Accounts
You now have the option to allow employees to collect points in their own account.
Once an employee (or additional card member) gets permission from the Primary Card Member, he or she can set up and link a separate Membership Rewards account to the Additional card.
So when that happens, the employee (or additional cardholder) can earn points in their account from spending, including in the 3X and 2X categories.
Each card will have its own rewards balance.
3. Only Earn Bonus Points in 1 Category
Some folks were able to earn 2X points twice for categories that overlapped.
For example, you have been able to buy advertising from Bing and get 2X points for computer software purchases and another 2X points for advertising.
AMEX has fixed this loophole. So beginning January 23, 2015, you will only earn bonus points for 1 category per purchase.
There are some changes coming to the The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN beginning January 23, 2015.
The most important change is that you can now choose your own 3X points category each year. This will give you more flexibility. If you spend more in a category outside of airlines, this means more points for you!
