UPDATE: The Chase Sapphire Preferred no longer earns 3X points on the 1st Friday of the month.
It’s the 1st Friday of the month, which means you can earn 3X points on dining with Chase Sapphire Preferred.
You usually get 2X points for dining, so this is 1 extra Chase Ultimate Rewards point per dollar.
But How Can You Get Even MORE Points?
Double dip! When you combine 3X points from Chase Sapphire Preferred’s 1st Friday with Rewards Network, you can earn up to 8X points on dining.
Just sign-up for a free Rewards Network account and register your Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card. You’ll automatically get the points when you use your card at 1 of their ~10,000 participating restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.
You can earn points or miles with many airlines including:
- American Airlines
- Delta Airlines
- Hilton Hotels
- IHG Rewards
- Southwest Airlines
- United Airlines
I won’t go out of my way to only dine at Rewards Networks restaurants, bars, and clubs but I consider it a nice surprise when I DO happen to use my card at 1 of their ~10,000 participating locations.
You can also keep your airline and hotel accounts active with Rewards Network. Some programs delete all your points if you don’t use them! For instance, Hilton points expire if you don’t add or use points at least once every 12 months.
How the Points Add Up
Let’s say you want to earn United Airlines miles. On the 1st Friday of the month you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card to pay $40 at a Rewards Network restaurant, bar, or nightclub.
Here’s how many points you could earn:
- 120 Chase Ultimate Rewards points (3X points Chase Sapphire Preferred x $40 restaurant bill)
- 200 United points (5X points Rewards Network x $40 restaurant bill)
You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United with the Sapphire Preferred card.
So this gives you a total of ~320 United points.
No Coupon Needed
Some folks are concerned about appearing too thrifty. What makes this deal great is you don’t have to use any coupons or promotion codes.
Just pay with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card and earn the points!
Save at More Than Just Restaurants
Chase has the final say on what counts as a “restaurant” purchase. However, many bars, pubs, and nightclubs also serve food and are counted as dining establishments. In my experience, many of these also earn the 3X dining points, even if you only order drinks.
Buying Gift Cards at Restaurants
You can also get 3X points when you buy gift cards directly from the restaurant to use later. This could be good if you don’t have time to eat out today, but you still want to earn the bonus points.
Do You Get 3X Points When Dining Abroad?
Yes. Use your Chase Sapphire Preferred in foreign countries to get 2X points on dining every day and 3X points on the 1st Friday of the month. The Chase Sapphire Preferred does NOT charge foreign transaction fees.
Today you can earn 3X points on dining with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
I wouldn’t go to a restaurant just to earn 1 extra point per dollar. But if you already have plans to eat out today, it’s nice to earn more points.
So if you go to a restaurant or bar today, remember to pay with your Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card!
