Via The Points Guy, the increased 50,000 point sign-up bonuses on the Chase Southwest cards may be ending today!

That said, I’m pretty sure that at least one Southwest card will still have the 50,000 points sign-up bonus even after today.  This is the peak traveling season, and Southwest wouldn’t want to promote the lower (regular) offer of 25,000 points in airports.

Folks who can refer the Southwest card to others say that the offer is ending in January, so I’m pretty sure that this offer will be around for some more time.  And Southwest usually brings back these offers every 3 or 4 months, so no need to panic!

The sign-up bonuses on these cards are by far the best deal for domestic travel50,000 points is worth ~$715 in Southwest flights.

But if you get 2 cards (and earn an extra 6,000 points), you’ll qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass.  With the Companion Pass, your companion will fly with you for almost free (on paid and award tickets) for up to ~2 years!

Now is a great time to qualify for the Companion Pass, because if you earn it in early 2015, it will be valid for almost 2 years (until the end of 2016).

It’s rumored that the increased sign-up bonus on the Chase Southwest cards will end today.  Normally, the bonus is 25,000 points, but a few times each year, Chase increases the bonus to 50,000 points after you complete minimum spending requirements.

Southwest points are worth ~1.43 cents per point towards flights.  So the sign-up bonus on 1 card is already worth ~$715 in travel.

Southwest flies throughout the US, as well as to Mexico and the Caribbean.

But the sweeter deal is to earn 110,000 points in a calendar year to get the Southwest Companion Pass.

If you got 2 cards now (for example, 1 personal and 1 business), you could complete the minimum spending requirement early next year.  Then you’d earn a Southwest Companion Pass valid until December 31, 2016.  That’s almost 2 years of Big Travel with Small Money!

But you have to time your spending correctly!  You want the bonus points to post to your account after January 1, 2015, so don’t meet the minimum spending requirement until after your December 2014 statement closing date.

Even If You’re New (Maybe NOT This New), You Could Qualify for a Business Card!

If you miss this deal, don’t worry.  The increased bonuses normally come around again a few times a year.  But I’m not exactly sure when they’ll return.

And there’s almost always at least 1 Southwest card with a 50,000 point bonus available.

Bottom Line

Via The Points Guy, the increased 50,000 point sign-up offers on the Chase Southwest cards could be ending today.  But I suspect that we’ll see at least 1 of the cards still have the sign-up bonus after today.

If you were hoping to use these cards to help earn the Southwest Companion Pass in early 2015, this could be your last chance.

But if you’re NOT in a hurry to earn the Companion Pass, you should know these better offers usually re-appear after a few months.

Did you get the increased bonus to earn the Southwest Companion Pass for ~2 years this time around?

  1. Crap, I tried to apply for both cards this past Sunday. Was approved for the Plus card, then got the msg for the Premier card saying I would receive a response in 7-10 days by regular mail.

Is there any way to get the approval sooner?

If I get approved in writing, would I still get the bonus? I would hate to be approved but not get the 50k out of it.

  2. Nice Kansas City picture with Jack Stack Barbecue!! 🙂

  3. If I was only for one Southwest card, can I transfer Hyatt points to Southwest Reward to count toward 110,000 points? Is the Hyatt transfer a 1:1 ratio?

  4. @Dub Z : Call the chase re-consideration line and ask them to move the credit from an other active account to have the card approved. I was able to do this successfully.

@Alex : Yes you can do a Hyatt -> Southwest transfer. 5,000 Hyatt points to 2,400 Southwest points. Our Superhero Darius has a detailed post here for it : http://millionmilesecrets.com/2013/10/27/reader-question-no-you-cant-transfer-southwest-points-to-earn-the-southwest-companion-pass/

  5. Can you apply for both versions of the personal card and get 50k for both if approved?

Also can spouses combine points toward a companion pass?

    Thanks

  6. I applied for the personal Premier card and business Plus card on Nov 25, called the reconsideration line the next day and was approved for the Premier but not the business Plus. I then applied for personal Plus card on Dec 1, called the recon line today and was approved for second personal card! They had to move the credit limit around for other Chase cards but overall very smooth and easy process.

I can’t wait to start spending to achieve Companion Pass status in 2015! Thank you Darius for the educational and money saving tip! 🙂

  7. Hi Darius,
I applied for both the cards (using your links) but it seems the decision is pending for business card. Can you please tell me which number to call?
    Thanks

  8. So I have a weird situation. Applied for business and personal plus cards, and got deferred on both. Called business recon first – they approved me for 20k+, and then said sorry – personal is denied. suggested calling in a week later to have them split the credit line between the two cards. “Shouldn’t be a problem”. Well, due to a bankruptcy charge off more than 10 years ago, they wouldn’t approve me for a personal card, saying I don’t have enough history to have two cards with them (even if they split the credit line). I had a pleasant conversation with the gentleman who was helping me out, but he said that there was nothing to do but to reapply later. They want to see how I handle the one card. I suggested scaling back the credit line and then splitting, but he said that he couldn’t do that – I would have to call another line, they would scale the credit line back, and then I’d have to reapply. Definitely scratching my head on this one.

  10. Hi,
If I’m still awaiting a response on the Chase Ink Plus business card, can I still apply for these southwest cards? They’re all through Chase, but I’ve read Chase has a thing about applying for too many cards at once.

  11. I’m interested in Tara’s questions. Can a person apply for both personal cards? Or, can spouses combine points toward a companion pass? Does anyone know?

  12. Nice picture of Jack Stack BBQ. Let me know when you guys are in KC next time and I’ll treat you lunch.

  13. Mike – Thanks for all the numbers.
Todd – according to what I’ve read, spouses cannot combine points towards a companion pass.

  14. I applied for both personal cards, got approved on one and was pending on the other. Called today to follow up (since the 50K offers are no longer there), and they have no record of a second application. The rep also informed me that you can apply for two cards, but you wouldn’t get the offers for both within 24 mos. Wondering if that’s because they were both personal cards. Guess I’ll have to wait until the next time they offer 50K on the business card 🙁

  15. AAD – I applied for both personal cards and was approved and received the bonus points on both cards. They are “different” products in that one is a plus and the other is a premier, so the points should post for both.

Make sure to meet the minimum spend in January to maximize a companion pass!

  16. @Danny – I guess since one was immediately approved and the other was pending, I missed the chance to get points for both. I’ve called Chase and Southwest, and both have said you can only get the promotion for one Southwest card. Looks like I’ll get my 50K points but not the 100K. Very disappointing…

  17. Looks like 3 of those offers are dead. The only that works is the Personal Premier link. No companion pass for me. 🙁
