Million Mile Secrets reader Sally commented:

I already have The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN, but it is coming up for renewal. I would rather not pay the $175 renewal fee, so I’m deciding whether to get the American Express EveryDay card instead.

Can I transfer my American Express Membership Rewards points to that card?  And can I earn American Express Membership Rewards points to transfer to airlines the same way I did with the The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN?

2 EveryDay Cards That Earn American Express Membership Rewards Points
Sally Can Transfer American Express Membership Rewards Points Earned From the American Express EveryDay Card to Certain Airlines, Like British Airways

Sally can’t transfer American Express Membership Rewards points from 1 card to another like she would with Chase cards.  Instead she gets 1 American Express Membership Rewards account number, and as long as her new AMEX card is linked to that account, the American Express Membership Rewards points accumulate in the same account.

So she can keep her American Express Membership Rewards points if her American Express EveryDay card or American Express EveryDay Preferred card is linked to the same American Express Membership Rewards account as The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN.

And she can continue to earn American Express Membership Rewards points that she can transfer to certain airlines and hotels.

Note: The American Express EveryDay and American Express EveryDay Preferred cards now come with 1 year of Amazon Prime after you’ve met the minimum spending requirements.

So Sally can keep her American Express Membership Rewards points from expiring when she cancels The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN as long as she has another American Express card which earns Membership Rewards points.

Sally might also have other cards that earn American Express Membership Rewards points such as:

She can call the number at the back of her American Express card to make sure that her cards are linked to the same American Express Membership Rewards account.

American Express EveryDay Card

Sally can get 10,000 American Express Membership Rewards points and 1 year of Amazon Prime’s streaming music and unlimited 2-day shipping after spending $1,000 within the first 90 days on the American Express EveryDay card.  As always, terms and conditions apply.

It’s not a big sign-up bonus, but there’s NO annual fee.  Because the American Express EveryDay card has no-annual fee, it’s a great card for Sally to keep for a long time to build her credit history.

Sally earns:

  • 2X American Express Membership Rewards points per $1 spent at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 a year)
  • 1X American Express Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on everything else

Sally earns an extra 20% American Express Membership Rewards points when she uses the card to make more than 20 purchases within a billing cycle (less returns and credits).  There is no minimum transaction amount for any of those 20 purchases.

Sally Gets 20% More American Express Membership Rewards Points When She Uses Her American Express EveryDay Card 20 Times In a Billing Cycle

So she’s effectively earning:

  • 2.4X American Express Membership Rewards points per $1 spent at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 a year)
  • 1.2X American Express Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on everything else

And Sally can transfer those American Express Membership Rewards points to certain airlines and hotels.

EveryDay Preferred Card

Sally gets 15,000 American Express Membership Rewards points and a year of Amazon Prime from the American Express EveryDay Preferred card after spending $1,000 within the first 90 days.  As always terms and conditions apply.

The sign-up bonus isn’t very big and the $95 annual fee is NOT waived the 1st year.

However, Sally can transfer her American Express Membership Rewards points to this card, and then transfer to certain airlines and hotels.

With the American Express EveryDay Preferred card, Sally earns:

  • 3X American Express Membership Rewards points at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 a year)
  • 2X American Express Membership Rewards at US gas stations
  • 1X American Express Membership Rewards points on everything else

When Sally uses this card to make more than 30 purchases within a billing cycle, she earns an extra 50% American Express Membership Rewards points (less returns and credits).  There is no minimum transaction amount for any of those 30 purchases.

So she’s effectively earning:

  • 4.5X American Express Membership Rewards points at US Supermarkets (up to $6,000 a year)
  • 3X Membership Rewards at US gas stations
  • 1.5X Membership Rewards points on everything else

Bottom Line

To avoid paying the $175 annual fee on The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN, Sally can connect her American Express Membership Rewards account to the American Express EveryDay card or the American Express EveryDay Preferred card.

Both cards earn American Express Membership Rewards points that are transferrable to partner airlines and hotels.
