Airbnb is a website that connects travelers with owners renting rooms, apartments, or entire houses.  It can be a cheaper (and very different!) alternative to booking paid stays in hotels, especially in expensive cities.

How Does It Work?

Renting an Airbnb Room or Apartment Can Be Much Cheaper Than Hotels in Expensive Cities, Like New York

Once you find a rental you are interested in, you can put in a booking request.  Airbnb will put you directly in touch with the owner.

Airbnb Could Save You Money When You Stay in an Apartment Near the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York City

This could be a good opportunity for folks who are curious about Airbnb to save money and give the service a try!

Note:  The fine print on this deal says the code “may not be used for bookings made through Airbnb’s mobile apps and may not be combined with other coupons or codes.”

Airbnb counts as a travel expense, so don’t forget to use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card to earn 2 points per $1 you spend.  Or use the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard and redeem miles for 2.2% cash back on your booking.

I have friends who have used Airbnb and found it a great way to spend less money while getting a more “local experience” than staying in a hotel.  And nearly every Airbnb apartment has free internet!

And some places for rent have washing machines, full kitchens, etc.  This can really help you save money on longer stays.  And it’s not that unusual to receive a welcome gift such as a bottle of wine.

But your experience may be different.  That said, a 20% off coupon might give you the bravery you need to try it! 😉

Bottom Line

First-time users of Airbnb can get a 20% discount off a booking of $200 or more when they use coupon code 20off and book before November 1, 2014.  For bookings less than $200, you can save $25 by signing-up through my referral link.

Airbnb rentals can be a cheaper alternative to hotel rooms, especially in expensive cities.  This promotion is a good (cheap!) way to try out their service if you haven’t used them before.

For folks who have used Airbnb before, do you have any tips to help those new to it?
