Do you have frequent paid and award stays at IHG hotels?
If you have an iOS (Apple) or Android mobile device, you should consider downloading the free IHG Hotels app. That’s because it lets you access promotions and rates not available to IHG members who don’t have the app.
For instance, IHG is having a 48-hour sale on paid nights at European hotels starting 8:01 pm Eastern Time on October 30, 2014. Folks with the IHG app will be able to book these rates 24 hours before everyone else!
What Does the IHG Mobile App Do?
Link: IHG Mobile App
- Search for IHG hotels in a specific city or near your current location
- Book paid and award stays, and manage reservations (change or cancel)
- View hotel photos and easily access hotel contact info and maps from your current location
- Add reservations to Passbook (an iPhone app that stores boarding passes, gift cards, coupons, etc.)
- Access mobile exclusive rates and participate in deals not available to other IHG members
How to Use the App
Once you’ve downloaded the app, log-in with your IHG Rewards Club number and PIN. You can sign-up for an account from within the app if you don’t have one.
Once you’ve logged-in, you can view your account activity and see upcoming stays (plus change or cancel them if needed).
You can search for paid and award nights at hotels by specifying a city and date. Or, search for hotels near your current location. You can filter your results by distance or brand, or view locations on a map.
Once you’ve found a hotel you’re interested in, you’ll see more information, photos, and a map. Select “Book Now” to make your reservation.
Like on the IHG website, you can choose your room type and rate. Then you can book the room through the app, just as you would online.
Note: IHG Points + Cash bookings can NOT be made through the app.
You can also view your current reservations, and change or cancel them if needed.
By clicking on a reservation, you can view details, call the hotel, and see a map or get directions from your present position to the hotel. On iPhones, you can automatically add the reservation to your Passbook.
This is a very convenient way to search for hotels and manage your reservations. I like not having to fuss with Google to get the information I need!
One other cool thing: While in the app, if you turn your phone horizontally, it will automatically display a virtual IHG Rewards card if you need to show it at check-in.
Request Early Check-In, Get Notified by Text When Room Is Ready
Link: Anywhere Check-In
If you allow IHG to send you push notifications (like a text message), they’ll send you a message the day before check-in asking your arrival time. After entering your desired arrival time and confirming your reservation, they’ll text you when your room is ready.
I like that you can request an early check-in without calling the hotel or showing up hoping for the best. You don’t have to wait around the hotel wondering when your room will be ready!
Download Digital Entertainment Direct to Your Phone

Did you know you can use IHG points to download eBooks, music, games, and software?
This isn’t necessarily the best use of IHG points (I’d rather use them for travel!), but if you’re away from home and want to download a book or a game, you can do so directly to your phone using the IHG app.
This could be a good use of IHG points if you just have a few points lingering in your account and want to get rid of them. You can get an eBook for as few as 150 points or an album for 300 points.
Access Promotions and Sales
Into the Nights

I wrote about IHG’s Into the Nights promotion, and how you can earn bonus points and free award nights by completing a certain number of “tasks,” like staying at a specific brand or booking a specified number of nights.
Not everyone gets the same offer, but some folks can complete a task by downloading and booking stays using the IHG app. I didn’t get that specific offer, but I do get credit if I book stays via the mobile site or the app.
I wish I’d gotten easier offers!
IHG 48-Hour Europe Sale

IHG is having a 48-hour sale on paid nights at European hotels starting 8:01 pm Eastern Time on October 30, 2014. They promise “amazing discounts” at over 600 hotels.
If you download the IHG app, you’ll be able to book these rates 24 hours before everyone else!
There’s no preview of what the sale prices will be, so this may or may not be a good deal. In the past, IHG has run sales offering up to 50% off rooms. If it’s a good sale, many hotels will probably sell out quickly. So having the IHG app is a huge advantage!
I suspect we’ll see more promotions and sales that give priority to IHG app users. And I’ll let you know if I hear of any.
The IHG hotels app is a useful tool for searching for hotels, booking paid and award nights, managing your reservations, and viewing your IHG account activity. It’s available for iOS (Apple) and Android mobile devices.
Elite members with the app can access IHG’s new Anywhere Check-In service and get a text message when the room is ready.
App users also get early or exclusive access to promotions and sales, including the upcoming IHG 48-Hour European hotel flash sale.
Do you use the IHG hotels app? What do you like about it?
