Daraius and I went to the Chicago Seminars, an annual miles and points event to geek out on our hobby!

Ready to Geek Out on Miles and Points at the Chicago Seminars

The Chicago Seminars and Frequent Traveler University events bring the online community to life.  I get to see old friends and make new ones!

Southwest Companion Pass

We used our Southwest Companion Pass to fly to the Chicago Seminars.  I always love looking at my ticket and seeing that it cost only ~$6 each way!

2 Fly for the Price of 1 With the Southwest Companion Pass

The Southwest Companion Pass is the best deal for domestic travel because your companion only pays for the airport taxes (~$6).  And if you time it right, you can get ~2 years of free travel!

You get the Companion Pass after you’ve earned 110,000 Southwest points in a calendar year.

Currently, you can get 50,000 Southwest points sign-up bonus on both the Southwest Premier (personal) and Southwest Premier (business) card after completing minimum spending requirement.  The sign-up bonus counts towards earning the Companion Pass.

Mile Nerds Unite

The seminars began Friday night, but I spent the evening having dinner with my college friend, Kim.  Kim has a very cute toddler son and is pregnant with another one!  It was great being able to catch up with her and meet her little one.  Daraius went out to hang out with his guy friends!

Early Saturday morning, I set up our booth.  I covered the table with hotel swag (including a toy stuffed stingray), airline amenity kits, and souvenirs from our trips to Italy, Bora Bora, and India.  I also put out a bowl of candy.

It’s fun to sit at the booth and greet the seminar attendees.  Folks are always so excited to be there, it’s contagious!

Miles and Points for Beginners

While I (wo)manned the booth, Daraius spoke about miles and points for beginners with Mommy Points.

Chicago Seminar Attendees Could Pick Which Session to Attend

Daraius and Mommy Points had a joint session for beginners.

Beginners Learning Tips on Miles & Points

The Beginners session covered topics like common pitfalls to avoid, the importance of setting goals, and examples of trips we’ve taken on miles and points.

There was also a Q&A session at the end.

Daraius Can Talk All Day…

Surprise “Beer” on Tap

After the sessions, there was a performance by a comedian who was very funny.  This was the 1st time a comedian performed at the Chicago Seminars, and I hope it’s not the last.

After the show, we had dinner at Shelby Campbell’s, the hotel restaurant.  We ordered Doritos-encrusted Mac-n-Cheese, Bavarian Pretzels, and Wisconsin Cheese Curds appetizers.  The cheese curds were the best!

We ordered drinks, including a very peculiar dark beer on tap!

Sunday

On Sunday, I hung out at the booth while Daraius did nothing.  It was another fun-filled, busy day!

  1. pedantic reader

The title of this post refers to a plural list of three things but uses the singular “what does…” – it should be “what do…” and this kind of error is distracting from the rest of the post (at least for me).

  2. Emily, it is always fun to chat with you at the MMS booth. Looking forward to seeing you and Daraius in DC.

  3. Any idea when 2015 dates will be announced for either Chicago Seminars or FTU?

  4. Absolutely agree. Those cheese curds were the best!

  5. Great seeing “both of you” again !
