Via The Frugal Travel Guy, you can get 5,000 Southwest points with your 1st hotel booking on Rocketmiles when you use your Southwest card.  You have to book by November 30, 2014, for stays through March 31, 2015.

You can get 5,000 bonus Southwest points when you make your 1st Rocketmiles hotel booking and pay with your Southwest card.

You have to make your booking by November 30, 2014.  But your hotel stay can be anytime before March 31, 2015.

With Rocketmiles, you can earn airline miles on hotel bookings:

You can choose which airline miles you want to earn for each booking.  You’ll earn 1,000 to 5,000 miles per night.  Sometimes you can earn bonus miles, like the 5,000 bonus Southwest points offer.

Note:  If you sign-up for Rocketmiles using my link, you get 1,000 extra points after your 1st stay, and I get 1,000 points.  You can also refer others and get 1,000 bonus points for each friend that signs up.

How Does Rocketmiles’ Prices Compare to Other Discount Sites?

Earning airlines miles for a hotel booking can be a good deal, but only if you don’t have to pay more for your hotel.  Let’s look at how Rocketmiles’ prices compares to other discounted hotel sites.

New York

You’ll pay ~$212 and earn 1,000 Southwest points (+ 5,000 Southwest points for 1st time booking and paying with your Southwest card) for the night of November 8, 2014, at the Metro Apartments.

5,000 Southwest Points With 1st Rocketmiles Booking When You Use Your Southwest Card

1 Night at the Metro Apartments Will Cost ~$212 But You’ll Earn up to 6,000 Southwest Points

You’ll pay ~$206 through Get a Room via Kayak.  So you’ll save ~$6, but lose up to 6,000 Southwest points.

Saving ~$6 Will Cost You 6,000 Southwest Points

I’d gladly pay ~$6 more to get ~$86 worth of Southwest points!  (Southwest points are worth 1.43 cents each.  So 6,000 Southwest points X 1.43 cents per point = ~$86)

Santa Barbara

You can book 1 night at the Ramada Santa Barbara on November 27, 2014, for ~$152 and earn 1,000 Southwest points.  And 5,000 Southwest points for 1st time booking and paying with your Southwest card.

You’ll Pay ~$152 for 1 Night at the Ramada Santa Barbara

You’ll pay the same price (~$152) through Get a Room via Kayak.

What I Like & Don’t Like About Rocketmiles

You can earn airlines miles on independent and small hotels that don’t have a loyalty program.

Southwest points earned through Rocketmiles on hotel stays counts towards the Southwest Companion Pass.  But bonus points, like the 5,000 bonus Southwest points offer, do NOT count towards the Companion Pass.

You get the Companion Pass after you’ve earned 110,000 Southwest points in a calendar year.

Both the Southwest Premier (personal) and Southwest Premier (business) card are offering a 50,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus after you complete the minimum spending requirement.  And the sign-up bonus counts towards earning the Companion Pass.

You Can Fly to Fort Lauderdale With Your Southwest Companion Pass, to Stay at the Sheraton Miami (a Short Drive From Fort Lauderdale)

This means with 2 Southwest cards, the minimum spending, and a couple of nights booked through Rocketmiles, you could get almost 2 years of free travel!

Rocketmiles doesn’t offer as many hotels compared to Kayak.  So you might not find a hotel in the city you’re visiting.  But it could be worth it if you can pay less and earn miles.

Sometimes you might pay higher prices booking through Rocketmiles.

You will NOT earn hotel points or elite stay credits when you book through Rocketmiles.  But some folks have gotten elite stay credits when they’ve charged something to their room.

Usually you’ll get your elite status perks, but it’s NOT guaranteed.  But the savings could be worth it!

Bottom Line

You can get 5,000 bonus Southwest points after your 1st Rocketmiles hotel booking when you pay with your Southwest card.  You have to book by November 30, 2014, for stays through March 31, 2015.

You earn 1,000 to 5,000 airlines miles on hotels booked through Rocketmiles.  Sometimes you can earn bonus miles, like the 5,000 bonus Southwest points offer.

Southwest points earned through Rocketmiles count towards the Southwest Companion Pass.  But the 5,000 bonus miles from using your Southwest credit card on your 1st hotel booking do NOT.

Rocketmiles doesn’t offer as many hotels compared to Kayak and sometimes you’ll pay more.  But it could be worth paying more to earn miles.

  1. I checked for availability for an upcoming Vegas trip and got this:

    No Offers Available
We don’t yet have any offers in Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV, United States. We’re working really hard to add more destinations, so check back in a few weeks

    Not an encouraging start.

  2. If you are new to Rocketmiles, sign up via the Flyertlk conga line and you’ll get another 2,000 rocketmiles, even without a hotel stay, tranferrable to any airline.

I’m on a mobile phone right now so it would be a pain to find the link, but go to http://www.flyertalk.com and do a thread search for the words rocketmiles and conga. The first page of the thread explains how it works. You’ll get 1000 miles for signing up using someone else’s referral code and another 1000 miles when someone else uses your referral code later (thus the conga concept).

  3. I’m assuming but just want to check-do the points post to Southwest after the hotel stay? We have to start the requalification process Jan 1 as mine expires 12/31 and don’t want anything to post until 2015. Thus I could book now for a stay in Jan and then the SW points will post to the account after the stay.

  4. Just wanted to thank you for your Rocketmiles post. I also wanted to let you know that Rocketmiles rejected my bonus because I tried to make a hotel booking using my son’s Rapid Rewards acct and his email but my Southwest CC. They stated that I would received the 1,000 miles ,but he needs to book with his own Southwest credit card to get the bonus.

  5. Does the referral bonus stack with the new member bonus offers such as the United MileagePlus one (https://www.rocketmiles.com/mp)? In other words if I sign up through a referral link (for the 1k bonus) and then book and complete the stay through the United link (for the 5k bonus) will I get both? The language for the United offer (and similar offers such as Air Berlin, etc.) suggests that the offers cannot be combined: “This promotional offer cannot be combined with any other offers, including a sign-up from referral bonus.” Can someone confirm that they were able to get both bonuses OR that they were only able to get one but not both?
