We all like to save money on vacation, and I’ve written about using sites like Restaurant.com to get deals (and earn extra points) when dining out at home and away.
Another trick Emily and I like to use is checking Groupon and LivingSocial for deals on food, activities, and attractions when we travel. It can be hit-and-miss, but sometimes you can get great discounts!
And the best part is, if you go through a shopping portal 1st, you can earn extra miles and points on an already good deal. I’ll show you how!
How Does It Work?
Groupon and LivingSocial are “deal-of-the-day” websites that offer discount coupons to restaurants, attractions, merchants, and activities. You can search for deals specific to a city or area, and sometimes the discounts are 50% or more.
That said, you will NOT often find discounts for very popular attractions or restaurants on these sites. Usually, the deals are for lesser-known businesses that are trying to attract new customers. But it’s always worth checking, because you might find a great deal!
You’ll have to sign-up for an account on each of these sites. It can be a pain, because they’ll frequently send you emails advertising new deals. So you might want to use a “junk” email account to sign-up.
But if you know you’ll be traveling to certain cities soon, it’s worth signing-up for alerts. They’ll send you a daily update on deals in these cities so you don’t have to keep going back to the site to check!
Example: Orlando, Florida
Suppose you’re heading to Orlando for a family vacation. You likely won’t find a deal for major attractions like Disney, Universal Studios, or SeaWorld on Groupon and LivingSocial, but you might find discounts on food or other activities!
I searched both sites for deals in Orlando. If you want a dinner show, are into arts and crafts, or want to let the kids burn off some energy at a trampoline park, Groupon has a deal for you!
And if you’re going out to eat, you could save some cash.
LivingSocial has deals on different restaurants and attractions.
But before you buy into a deal, remember to go through a shopping portal to earn extra miles and points!
Making the Most of These Deals
You can earn extra miles, points, or cash back by purchasing your Groupon or LivingSocial coupons through a shopping portal.
I use Evreward to find the best bonuses! But if there’s a specific portal you want to use, check it individually, because Evreward doesn’t always update their information quickly.
For example, you can get up to 5% cash back or 8 extra points per $1 you spend with Groupon, depending on the portal you use.
Evreward does NOT list the Chase Ultimate Rewards mall as having a bonus for Groupon, but when I checked, it was offering an extra 3 points per $1 you spend!
LivingSocial also has shopping portal bonuses, including 5X points through the Chase Ultimate Rewards shopping portal.
Remember, shopping portal bonuses change frequently, so it’s always best to double check the portal before buying.
In this case, the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal actually reduced its payout for LivingSocial to 3 points per $1 you spend. But Evreward hasn’t updated the information yet.
I love earning extra miles and points on an already good deal!
Major attractions and restaurants don’t always participate on these sites. But it’s worth looking to find something new!
And if you 1st go through a shopping portal, you can earn bonus miles, points, or cash back on the deals you get.
