We all like to save money on vacation, and I’ve written about using sites like Restaurant.com to get deals (and earn extra points) when dining out at home and away.

Another trick Emily and I like to use is checking Groupon and LivingSocial for deals on food, activities, and attractions when we travel.  It can be hit-and-miss, but sometimes you can get great discounts!

And the best part is, if you go through a shopping portal 1st, you can earn extra miles and points on an already good deal.  I’ll show you how!

How Does It Work?

Groupon and LivingSocial are “deal-of-the-day” websites that offer discount coupons to restaurants, attractions, merchants, and activities.  You can search for deals specific to a city or area, and sometimes the discounts are 50% or more.

That said, you will NOT often find discounts for very popular attractions or restaurants on these sites.  Usually, the deals are for lesser-known businesses that are trying to attract new customers.  But it’s always worth checking, because you might find a great deal!

Boing, Boing! You Might Find Something Unusual to Do!

You’ll have to sign-up for an account on each of these sites.  It can be a pain, because they’ll frequently send you emails advertising new deals.  So you might want to use a “junk” email account to sign-up.

But if you know you’ll be traveling to certain cities soon, it’s worth signing-up for alerts.  They’ll send you a daily update on deals in these cities so you don’t have to keep going back to the site to check!

When you pay for a deal, you’ll get a coupon to print out.  Or, if you have a smartphone, you can bring up your coupon via the Groupon or LivingSocial apps.

It’s Always Worth Checking for Deals When You Travel – You Never Know What You Might Find!

Example:  Orlando, Florida

Suppose you’re heading to Orlando for a family vacation.  You likely won’t find a deal for major attractions like Disney, Universal Studios, or SeaWorld on Groupon and LivingSocial, but you might find discounts on food or other activities!

I searched both sites for deals in Orlando.  If you want a dinner show, are into arts and crafts, or want to let the kids burn off some energy at a trampoline park, Groupon has a deal for you!

But before you buy into a deal, remember to go through a shopping portal to earn extra miles and points!

Making the Most of These Deals

Link:   Evreward

You can earn extra miles, points, or cash back by purchasing your Groupon or LivingSocial coupons through a shopping portal.

I use Evreward to find the best bonuses!  But if there’s a specific portal you want to use, check it individually, because Evreward doesn’t always update their information quickly.

For example, you can get up to 5% cash back or 8 extra points per $1 you spend with Groupon, depending on the portal you use.

Check Evreward for the Best Shopping Portal Offers for Groupon

Evreward does NOT list the Chase Ultimate Rewards mall as having a bonus for Groupon, but when I checked, it was offering an extra 3 points per $1 you spend!

Evreward Didn’t List It, but You Can Get 3 Points per $1 You Spend Through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal

So if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Freedom, or Chase Ink cards, you can save money and earn lots of extra points.

LivingSocial also has shopping portal bonuses, including 5X points through the Chase Ultimate Rewards shopping portal.

Evreward Says You Can Get an Extra 5 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 You Spend on LivingSocial Deals

Remember, shopping portal bonuses change frequently, so it’s always best to double check the portal before buying.

In this case, the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal actually reduced its payout for LivingSocial to 3 points per $1 you spend.  But Evreward hasn’t updated the information yet.

I love earning extra miles and points on an already good deal!

Bottom Line

Whether at home or on vacation, you can save money on dining out, attractions, and shopping when you buy coupons through deal-of-the-day sites like Groupon and LivingSocial.

Major attractions and restaurants don’t always participate on these sites.  But it’s worth looking to find something new!

And if you 1st go through a shopping portal, you can earn bonus miles, points, or cash back on the deals you get.

  1. You can earn even more points by buying groupon gift cards at Staples with your Ink Plus and then going through the shopping portal. 5X points for the card, 3X points for the portal.

  2. Austin Adventuress

And don’t forget to search international destinations! I’ve gotten great Groupon deals on food and activities for my European travels 🙂

  3. Love the blog! Thanks! You can buy Groupon gift cards at office supply stores using your Chase Ink cards and earn 5x ultimate rewards. Our local Groupon offers are pretty good so worth the effort.

  4. With evreward.com and chase ultimate reward the multiplier is usually correct, it just depends on what card you use. The freedom might have a higher bonus multiplier thet the ink, or sapphire so they list the highest one available for the program. So when using evreward for ultimate rewards bonus’ enter the protal using multiple cards to see which one has the highest bonus.

  5. You forgot GiltCity.com, which is the upscale competitor to Groupon and LS 🙂

  6. I just bought a Groupon and went through the UR portal as well, which lead to me finding something interesting. The CSP and the Ink Plus were showing 3 points/dollar, while the Freedom’s portal was 6 points/dollar. Not sure if it was a temporary thing, but it is worth noting that the UR mall does NOT necessarily pay out the same for every card’s individual portal. I also recall sites like 4inkjets and 123inkjets being 22 points/dollar for the CSP, but 15 points/dollar for the Ink Plus.

    It’s worth checking each card!
