UPDATE: The Chase Sapphire Preferred no longer earns 3X points on the 1st Friday of the month.
You usually earn 2X points on dining with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, but today you earn 3X points. That’s because every 1st Friday of the month, you earn 1 more point per dollar when you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card at restaurants (and many bars).
How Can You Earn Even More Points?
You can double dip by combining Chase Sapphire Preferred 3X points with Rewards Network.
To earn points through Rewards Network, sign-up for a free account and register your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Then simply use your credit card at a qualifying restaurant, bar, or nightclub to get as much as another 5 points per dollar spent.
You can earn points with many airlines and hotels including:
- American Airlines
- Delta Airlines
- Hilton Hotels
- IHG Rewards
- Southwest Airlines
- United Airlines
With Rewards Network, a $100 dinner can earn at the most 500 points (5X points x $100).
I wouldn’t pay for a $100 dinner just to earn 500 points. But when I happen to eat out, it’s nice to know I’m getting extra points.
Earning points through the Rewards Network also keeps your airline and hotel accounts active. Some programs delete all your points if you don’t use them!
For instance, United miles expire if you don’t add or use points at least once every 18 months.
An Example of How Many Points You Can Earn
Let’s say you want to collect United Airlines miles. So on the 1st Friday of the month you go to a Rewards Network restaurant and spend $50 on your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Here’s how many points you’d earn:
- 150 Chase Ultimate Rewards points (3X points for 1st Friday x $50)
- 250 United points (5X points from Rewards Network x $50)
Because you’re using the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United Airlines at a 1:1 ratio.
This gives you a total of 400 United points ( 150 United Airlines points transferred from Chase + 250 United points earned with Rewards Network).
Personally, I wouldn’t go to a restaurant tonight just to earn 400 United Airlines points. But I know some folks who might!
Restaurants Are NOT the Only Place You Get 3X Points
Chase makes the final decision on what counts towards the bonus. But in my experience, you also earn the bonus points at bars and nightclubs that also serve food. Even if you only order drinks, you will still earn 3X points.
Remember to pay before midnight. Only purchases made today will get 3X points.
3X Points on Gift Cards
You also earn 3X points when you buy restaurant gift cards directly from the restaurant to use later.
Will You Get 3X Bonus Points When Dining Abroad?
Yes. You still earn 3X points on dining when you use your card outside of the US. And the Chase Sapphire Preferred card does NOT charge foreign transaction fees.
Today is the 1st Friday of the month. So you can earn 3X points on dining when you pay with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
You can get additional points for dining by registering your Chase Sapphire Preferred card for free at Rewards Network.
On a $50 dinner the most you can earn is 400 points. So I wouldn’t run out to a restaurant just to get the points. However, if you happen to have plans to eat out today, it’s always nice to earn a few extra points.
