Million Mile Secrets reader Sergei commented:

I have a lot of Chase Ultimate Rewards points on my Chase Sapphire Preferred card. I am wondering if those points will get a 10% bonus at the end of the year if I transfer them to my Chase Freedom card.

I know they should get a 7% year-end bonus because they were earned on the Chase Sapphire Preferred, but will those Chase Ultimate Rewards points also get 10% year end bonus from the Chase Freedom card as “transfer” points?

Can You Get A 10 Bonus When You Transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

Sergei Won’t Get a 10% Bonus on Transferred Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

Unfortunately Sergei won’t get a 10% bonus if he transfers Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned from his Chase Sapphire Preferred card to his Chase Freedom card.

When you have a Chase bank account, you get a 10% bonus on the Chase Ultimate Rewards points you earn with your Chase Freedom card until December 2015.

Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is 1 of the best miles and points credit cards because Sergei gets 2X points on travel and dining and there are no foreign transaction fees.

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred card Sergei gets:

  • 2X Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent on travel and dining
  • 1X Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent on everything else
  • NO foreign transaction fees

Sergei can transfer his Chase Ultimate Rewards points to certain airlines and hotels at a 1:1 ratio:

7% Annual Bonus

Sergei also gets a 7% annual dividend on the Chase Ultimate Rewards points he earns each year.

Note:  The 7% bonus will end after 2015.

Because he earns 2X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on dining and travel, this means that Sergei earns 2.14 Chase Ultimate Rewards points for every $1 he spends on dining and travel.

So if Sergei spends $2,400 a year on dining and pays with his Chase Sapphire Preferred card, with the 7% annual dividend he earns 5,136 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($2,400 spent on dining X 2.14 Chase Ultimate Rewards points).

Sergei Earns 2.14 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points From the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card’s 7% Annual Dividend

And he earns 1.07 Chase Ultimate Rewards points on every $1 he spends everywhere else.  So if he spends $20,000 a year on his Chase Sapphire Preferred card on regular purchases, he’ll earn 21,400 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($20,000 spent on Chase Freedom purchases X 1.07 Chase Ultimate Rewards points).

Every Purchase Using His Chase Sapphire Preferred Card Earns Sergei 1.07 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

The 7% dividend posts with his February statement.  But the 7% bonus will end after 2015.

But because Sergei has a Chase bank account, he gets a 10% annual bonus on all purchases if he uses his Chase Freedom card.

Chase Freedom

With the Chase Freedom card Sergei earns Chase Ultimate Rewards Points that are redeemable for cash back.  He can also transfer his Chase Ultimate Rewards points to partner airlines or hotels like Hyatt, Southwest, British Airways, and United Airlines, IF he also has the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Bold, or Chase Ink Plus card.

Sergei can use these step-by-step instructions to transfer points from his Chase Freedom to 1 of those cards.

Plus every quarter he can earn 5X bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points (up to a maximum of 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per quarter) or 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points a year (or $300 cash back) when he makes purchases at certain bonus category merchants.

With 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Sergei can fly round-trip to Hawaii from the West Coast in economy or fly coach 1-way to Europe.

Sergei gets 5% cash back or 5X points when he uses his Chase Freedom at Amazon.com, Zappos.com and select department stores this quarter.

10% Annual Bonus Until 2015

Sergei also gets a 10% annual bonus on the Chase Ultimate Rewards points he earns each year from his Chase Freedom card IF he has a Chase checking account.

Note: The Chase Freedom 10% annual points bonus is ending after December 2015.

So if Sergei earns 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points in a year by maxing out the quarterly bonus categories, he’ll get an extra 3,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

But according to the terms of the Chase Freedom card, Sergei does NOT earn the 10% bonus on sign-up bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points or transferred Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

The 10% Annual Bonus Isn’t Earned on Transferred Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

Again, the Chase Freedom 10% annual points bonus is ending after December 2015.

Bottom Line

Sergei will not get a 10% bonus if he transfers his Chase Ultimate Rewards points from this Chase Sapphire Preferred card to his Chase Freedom card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card earns Sergei a 7% annual dividend on his yearly purchases.  But the 7% bonus will end in December 2015.

He earns a 10% annual bonus on all purchases from his Chase Freedom card because he has a Chase bank account.  However, he will NOT earn the 10% bonus on transferred Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Sergei’s 10% annual bonus on his Chase Freedom card also ends in December 2015.
