Evolve Money is changing their online bill pay service again, and for some folks this might not be good news. I’ve written about Evolve Money being a good way to pay bills that you can’t normally pay with credit cards, like utilities, student loans, and mortgages. That’s because they accept debit cards, including Visa and MasterCard gift cards, as a form of payment!
But in an email sent today, Evolve Money is now restricting folks to just 1 payment per biller account each month. I’ll tell you what this means!

Evolve Money is a great way to earn miles and points by using Visa and MasterCard gift cards (bought with a miles-and-points earning credit card) to pay bills that can’t normally be paid with a credit card. Many folks use Evolve Money to pay their utility bills, student loans, and car loans.
And until now, you could pay larger bills like your rent or mortgage by splitting up the payments. That’s because Evolve Money limits payments to $1,000 per day, and most gift cards come in denominations of $500 or less.
For example, folks wanting to pay their mortgage (say $2,000) would split their payment into 4 payments of $500 each over a couple of days. But starting September 1, 2014, you won’t be able to do that anymore!
New Policy, NOT Good News for Some
Evolve Money sent an email detailing the changes to its program. Starting September 1, 2014, you’ll only be able to make ONE payment a month to an individual biller. Their email says:
Dear Evolve Money Customer, Due to changes in our risk and regulatory compliance policies, Evolve Money will be implementing a limit of one payment per biller account per month. This change takes effect September 1, 2014. There are no limits on the number of cash payments made with a Reloadit pack or Evolve Pay Bucks. We realize that some of our users have taken advantage of the multiple payments per month to pay off larger expenses such as mortgages. We are currently working on ways to improve the bill paying experience for you and expect to announce details soon.
If you’ve been using Evolve Money to pay smaller bills like utilities, car loans, or student loans, this change will NOT affect you. If your payment to each biller is less than $500 per month (usually the highest denomination gift card available), then there’s nothing to worry about. But if you’re 1 of the folks who use gift cards with Evolve Money to pay their mortgage, rent, or other large expenses, this is a huge change.
You’ll still be able to make 1 payment, but you’ll be limited to the amount on your gift card (and no more than $1,000 per day).
Are There Other Options?
If you’re 1 of the folks who made multiple payments to the same biller each month, you still have options. You can load gift cards (including Vanilla Visa gift cards) to your American Express Serve account at Family Dollar, and pay your mortgage, rent, or other large bill that way. And you can use a credit card online to load $200 per day, up to $1,000 per month onto your Serve account.
And you can still load certain gift cards to your Bluebird account at Walmart, but the Vanilla Visa cards don’t work anymore. Either way, it can still be done, but you’ll have to make (probably multiple) trips to a store. Evolve Money was much more convenient!
Remember, things change frequently in our miles and points hobby. So even though this is going to affect a lot of folks negatively, there’ll always be new ways to get Big Travel with Small Money!
Starting September 1, 2014, Evolve Money will restrict folks to 1 payment per biller per month. So you won’t be able to split a large payment (for example your mortgage) into several payments, which many folks were doing with $500 gift cards.
There are still options for making large bill payments like rent or mortgage with gift cards, like loading your AMEX Serve or Bluebird accounts, but the process is much less convenient. How will this affect your bill payments using Evolve Money? Will you continue to use their service?
