You’ll get 500 free Virgin America miles when you join Virgin America’s Elevate frequent flyer program.

Emily and I haven’t flown on Virgin America yet because for domestic flights we fly almost exclusively on Southwest Airlines.  That’s because with our Companion Pass Emily can fly with me for nearly free!

How to Get an Extra 7,500 Bonus Virgin America Points

1.   New Members

You can get up to 7,500 bonus Virgin America points after your 1st Virgin America flight by December 31, 2014.

You’ll get:

  • 2,500 Virgin America points flying Main Cabin (economy)
  • 5,000 Virgin America points flying Main Cabin Select (premium economy)
  • 7,500 Virgin America points flying First Class

Bonus Virgin America points will post to your account within 4 to 6 weeks after your 1st flight.

2.   Existing Virgin America Elevate Members

If you’re already a Virgin America Elevate member, you can earn up to 7,500 bonus Virgin America points by referring family and friends to Virgin America IF they take their 1st flight by December 31, 2014.

You’ll get:

  • 2,500 Virgin America points when they fly Main Cabin
  • 5,000 Virgin America points when they fly Main Cabin Select
  • 7,500 Virgin America points when they fly First Class

Bonus Virgin America points will post to your account within 4 to 6 weeks after their flight.

The terms says you can make unlimited referrals.

You can earn more Virgin America points and save money on inflight purchases when you use 1 of their credit cards. That said, I don’t think the Virgin America cards are that lucrative.

How to Get ~$100 to ~$300 Off Virgin America Flights

If you fly First Class (and your friend refers you), you & your friend would together get an extra 15,000 Virgin America points.  That’s because you’ll get 7,500 Virgin America points for referring a friend who takes their 1st Virgin America flight in First Class.  And you’ll get 7,500 Virgin America points for taking your 1st Virgin America flight in First Class.  15,000 Virgin America points are worth ~$300!

If you fly in the Main Cabin (coach), and your friend refers you, you’d together get an extra 5,000 Virgin America points (2,500 Virgin America points when you fly Main Cabin + 2,500 Virgin America points for your friend when you fly Main Cabin).  5,000 Virgin America points are worth ~$100!

Remember you would both have to fly by December 31, 2014.

Using Virgin America Points

Virgin America points are worth ~2 cents when redeemed for flights, so 500 Virgin America points gets you ~$10 in travel.

And 8,000 Virgin America points (500 free Virgin America points for signing-up + 7,500 Virgin America points if you fly First Class by December 31, 2014) gets you ~$160 in travel.

Just like Southwest and JetBlue, the number of Virgin America points for a flight is tied directly to the cash price.  That also means there are no black-out dates.  If a seat is for sale, you can get it with points.

JetBlue allows all passengers 1 checked bag for free.  But Virgin America charges coach (Main Cabin) customers $25.  They don’t charge for 2 bags when you fly First Class.

You can use Virgin America points on other airlines, such as Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia, Singapore Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines.  But many will charge fuel surcharges.

You can use the Virgin America rewards calculator tool to see how many Virgin America points you need for an award ticket.

You can get 500 free Virgin American points when you join Virgin America’s Elevate frequent flyer program.

If you’re already a Virgin America Elevate member, you’ll get up to 7,500 bonus Virgin America points by referring your family and friends AFTER they take their 1st flight before December 31, 2014.

    Bali. Bali. Bali.

  3. I created an account but it says I have 0 miles. Do the 500 for signing up take a while to post, or have I maybe done something wrong?
