Unlike previous promotions where you shared US Airways miles, you can buy US Airways miles and get a 100% bonus through July 31, 2014.

You will earn 100% bonus US Airways miles on up to 50,000 purchased US Airways miles, for a total of 100,000 miles.  So you can buy 50,000 US Airways miles and get 100,000 US Airways miles for ~$1,881 ($1,750 cost to buy 50,000 US Airways miles + ~$131 tax).

The cost to purchase US Airways miles is normally 3.5 cents per mile, but with this promotion you’re buying them for ~1.88 cents per mile (~$1,881 cost to buy 100,000 US Airways miles / 100,000 US Airways miles). However, your account has to be at least 12 days old AND you have to be targeted for the offer.  Emily and I weren’t targeted. 🙁  But maybe you were. 🙂 Buying US Airways miles does NOT count as a travel purchase because US Airways miles purchases are processed through Points.com.  So you don’t get extra points using your Chase Sapphire Preferred, US Airways Mastercard, American Express Premier Rewards Gold, or Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard.

Although, you will get the 2X points per $1 as you do with every purchase using your Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard.  If you decide to buy US Airways miles, I’d recommend you use whichever card you need to meet minimum spending requirements on.

How to Use US Airways Miles

1.   Hawaii

You can get 2 round-trip coach tickets from Austin to Honolulu for July 24, 2014, to July 30, 2014, for 80,000 US Airways miles.

If you bought the exact same flights, you would pay $2,160.

Buying US Airways miles saves you ~$279 ($2,160 cost to buy 2 round-trip coach tickets – ~$1,881 cost to buy 100,000 US Airways miles).

Although, if you don’t mind flying on the red-eye, you would only pay $1,994 for 2 round-trip coach tickets via Kayak.

Buying US Airways miles instead of flying overnight is more convenient and cheaper by $113 ($1,994 cost to buy 2 round-trip tickets – ~$1,881 cost to buy US Airways miles).

2.   France

Two people can fly round-trip in coach from Austin to Paris, France on November 8, 2014, to November 15, 2014 for 120,000 US Airways miles.

The same flights could cost $2,730!

You would save ~$849 if you bought US Airways miles ($2,730 cost of 2 round-trip tickets – ~$1,881 cost to buy 100,000 US Airways miles).

If you were planning on buying tickets, you would save money buying US Airways miles instead of buying a ticket.  However, you don’t earn US Airways miles on award tickets and there are a limited number of award seats.  I’d still rather use miles and points from credit card sign-up bonuses and not spend cash.  But you should do what’s best for you.

You could also use 100,000 US Airways miles to fly round-trip Business Class to South America.  Or you use 110,000 US Airways miles to fly to North Asia with a stopover in Europe.  But you have to call US Airways at 800-428-4322.

Bottom Line

You can get a 100% bonus when you buy US Airways miles through July 31, 2014.

You can buy up to 50,000 US Airways miles and get 50,000 bonus US Airways miles for ~$1,881, which is ~1.88 cents per mile.

If you have to buy tickets, you could save money buying US Airways miles instead.  But you won’t earn miles on award tickets and you might not be able to find low-level award seats.
