Update:  A credit card offer in this post, may no longer be available, but check the Hot Deals for the latest offers!

There’s only 1 week left to apply for the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express up to 30,000 point sign-up offer.  This offer usually only comes around once a year, so you’ll probably have to wait until next summer if you don’t get it now.

The increased bonus applies to both the personal and business versions of the card.  But you have to apply by June 30, 2014.

Where Will You Go With 30,000 Starwood Preferred Guest Points?

Worth It or Not?

The sign-up bonus on the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card is normally 25,000 points after you spend $5,000 in the 1st 6 months.  But in the past several years, American Express has increased the bonus by 5,000 points (with the same minimum spending) once per year.

So you’ll get an extra 5,000 points with this sign-up bonus.  I’ve written about the Big Travel with Small Money you can get with Starwood points, and many of us already have the card.  But if you haven’t gotten a personal or business version of the card yet (they’re different products so you can get both), the extra 5,000 points on the sign-up bonus is a great deal!

But those of us who already have the card (or both cards) can refer a friend and get an extra 5,000 Starwood points when they sign-up!

What I really like about the Starwood Preferred Guest program is that you can get free nights for as few as 2,000 points per night.  With 5,000 extra Starwood points, you could get:

There aren’t many Category 1 hotels in North America, but overseas you can get some very good deals.  You could use the extra 5,000 Starwood points towards 2 weekend nights at Le Meridien Pyramids Hotel & Spa in Egypt.

Or, you could spend 2 weekend nights at the Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort & Spa in Indonesia.

Hotels Like the Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta in Indonesia Are a Great Bargain With Starwood Points

There are many more North American choices among Starwood Category 2 and 3 hotels.  You could stay at the Category 2 Westin Atlanta Airport for 4,000 Starwood points during the week.

Or you could go on a ski getaway to Calgary, Canada at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel & Suites for 3,500 Starwood points plus $55 per night.

You’ve got a lot of options for where to spend your extra 5,000 Starwood points when you apply for the increased bonus!  But remember, this offer ends on June 30, 2014, so you only have a week left to decide.

Bottom Line

You only have 1 week left to apply for the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express up to 30,000 point sign-up offer.  The personal and business versions of the card both have the increased bonus.  But you need to apply by June 30, 2014.

An extra 5,000 Starwood points can get you more travel than you think!  There are some great low category redemptions with Starwood hotels, especially for weekend getaways.

Where would you go with an extra 5,000 Starwood points?

  1. I’d like to cash in on this deal, but I already have the Starwood Business Amex and I know Amex is cracking down on giving the same person multiple bonus offers for the same card (I had the personal Starwood Amex before as well). Could I have my wife apply, sync the account to my Starwood Preferred Guest number, and still be eligible for the 30k sign-on bonus?

  2. I am interested in the Starwood credit card because of all the airlines that points can be transfered into. I would use these points predominately for international travel. The problem I anticipate is (I have read) it takes several days for the points to transfer to the airlines. Because of this time lag I could loose the flight that I am interested in. This would negate my purpose for applying for this card.
Am I correct in that it does take this amount of time for points to transfer from the Starwood card to the airlines? Is there a way to shorten the time so that the points would transfer immediately?

  3. Can you apply and be approved for the personal and biz card at the same time or will one application automatically be rejected?

  4. I applied for both, business and personal card 4 days ago.
Applied for business card online and got approved right away.
Then decided to apply for a personal card so I called in.
They took all my info and processed the application.
Customer service representative told me he could not have give me application status right away and referred me to check americanexpress.com/applicationstatus for further information.
Today, 4 days later personal card application is showing approved as well!
I am very happy about it 🙂

anybody else get this message on the side of the application?

If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer. This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.

I’m good with the last sentence, but not the first one.

    • @Roger@lifelaidout – No need to do that. You can transfer Starwood points to others at the same address for free.

@ Shaine – You’re right that it does take time to transfer Starwood points to airlines and there isn’t a way to shorten it.

      @Joe – I’d wait a few days between applications.

      @Neno – Congrats!

  6. I had been debating whether to apply for this for me before June 30th as my husband applied for his a few weeks ago along with other cards. Especially, I am not sure now if I can load Visa GC to GoBank any longer at WalMart. I, however, went ahead and got approved today using your link as I needed to earn more Delta skymiles (by transferring SPG points) on my own since AX Membership Rewards points are not transferable to others even online. It is such a hustle to earn Delta miles just to get one trip to Europe for two in Business (Unfortunately, after January 2015), indeed.

  7. Just want to make sure since Captian Hooks mentioned above…I have never had the SPG card, but of course I currently have an American Express account. I didn’t see the message “If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer. This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.on the application page” on the application page when I applied. Am I getting bonus for sure? Thank you!

How important is it to American Express to have their SPG Business card used only for business expenses?
What about the Chase United Business card?
And the USank’s Club Carlson Business card?
Is it safe to charge cruises, groceries, laundry and other personal expenses to all of them, or is one more sensitive?
Thanks very much for all you’ve written for us!
