Did you know you can earn extra miles and points by referring your family and friends for credit cards?

There are some good referral promotions right now for the Starwood hotel card, Chase Freedom, and Chase Sapphire Preferred cards.  You may also be able to get a referral bonus with other American Express cards.

Note:  These are all limited-time offers ending in the next few weeks.

Which Cards Qualify?

1.   Starwood Preferred Guest American Express

You can earn 5,000 Starwood points when you refer a friend (and they’re approved for a card).  Your friend’s application needs to be approved by June 30, 2014 to get the bonus.  And because the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express currently has an increased sign-up bonus of up to 30,000 points, your friend will get a great deal, too!

You can earn a maximum of 55,000 Starwood points per year (11 referrals).  That’s a lot of Big Travel with Small Money!

To refer a friend, go to the American Express Refer a Friend website and sign-in to your American Express account.

Log-In to Your American Express Account to Refer a Friend

Once you’ve logged in, you’ll have the option to select the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest card.  If you have other American Express cards, you might get a referral offer on those, too!  In this case, there was also a similar offer for the Gold Delta SkyMiles American Express card.  You may not get the same offer.

Once you’ve selected the card, you’ll be prompted to enter your friend’s information (full name and email address).  You can refer up to 5 friends at once, and can add a personalized message so that your friend knows it’s not a generic promotion but actually came from you!

When your friend is approved, you’ll get 5,000 Starwood points deposited to your account.  And they’ll get up to 30,000 Starwood points after completing minimum spending on the card.  But remember, this offer is only good until June 30, 2014.

2.   Chase Freedom

You’ll get 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($50 cash back) when you refer a friend and they make their 1st purchase on the card.  You have to refer your friend by June 20, 2014, and you’ll get the referral bonus as long as they’re approved and make a purchase on the card by September 30, 2014.

Meanwhile, your friend will get the increased bonus of 20,000 points ($200 cash back) the Chase Freedom card currently offers.

(I wonder if this means the Chase Freedom increased bonus offer will end on June 20, 2014 too?)

You can earn a maximum of 50,000 points per year (10 referrals).  That’s $500 cash back, or a lot of travel when you transfer points to your Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or (no longer offered) Chase Ink Bold card, and then to airline and hotel partners in the Chase Ultimate Rewards program.

To refer a friend, go to the Chase Refer a Friend website and enter your last name, zip code, and last 4 digits of your Chase Freedom card.

Enter Your Details on the Chase Refer a Friend Website

After you enter your information, you’ll have the option to invite as many friends as you want.  You’ll need to enter your friends’ full names and email addresses.

Refer as Many Friends as You Like, but You’ll Only Get the Referral Bonus for up to 10

Once your friend is approved and makes a purchase on the card (before September 30, 2014), you’ll get 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points deposited into your account.

If you prefer, you can use social media to refer friends instead.  Chase gives you the option to invite friends via Facebook or Twitter.  I like that idea!

3.   Chase Sapphire Preferred

If you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you’ll get 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points when you refer a friend by June 30, 2014.  You’ll get the referral bonus if they’re approved and make a purchase on the card by November 30, 2014.  And your friend will get 40,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after meeting minimum spending.

The referral process is the same as for the Chase Freedom card.  Just enter the last 4 digits of your Chase Sapphire Preferred card on the Chase Refer a Friend website.  Then you’ll be able to invite as many friends as you like (but you’ll only get the bonus for the 1st 10 that are approved).

Or you can refer friends via social media instead of sending emails.

Remember, to get the bonus, your friend must be approved and use the card at least once before November 30, 2014.

Bottom Line

You can earn extra miles and points by referring friends and family for the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express, Chase Freedom, and Chase Sapphire Preferred cards.  You may also get an offer to refer friends for other American Express cards.  But these offers are all ending soon!

In all cases, you can earn 5,000 points per referral, up to a maximum of 55,000 (American Express) or 50,000 (Chase) points per year.  That’s a lot of Big Travel with Small Money!

  1. Did the freedom about a week ago, but still no invite?

  2. The SPG referral link I sent to my friend shows a signup bonus of 25,000 starpoints. Is there anyway for him to get a 30,000 bonus while using my referral link?

  3. Matt the Coffeeman

I have a Sapphire Preferred but the following message:

•This Promotion is currently being tested and only eligible customers will be able to get through the authentication screen to refer a friend. Make sure you entered your information exactly as it appears on your account. If you feel you’ve received this message in error please call the number on the back of your card for assistance.

Annoying and I hope they fix it soon.

  4. I referred someone and after doing so I realized that it ended up offering a 25,000 signup bonus. That person may not have signed up for it when they saw that. I referred my husband and I have already gotten 5000 credited to my account for the referral. Also, he has used the card for one purchase and has already gotten 10,000 for the initial purchase even though the first statement has not even closed. Super cool! Love it when things work out like. Next weekend we are using some of my starpoints so it will be good to build up the supply again. 🙂

  5. got the same error message as Matt the Coffeeman but with my Freedom card. #fail

  6. Pretty sure Chase requires you to have the card for a minimum amount of time before the referral section will work.

  7. I have all three of these personal cards and would love to refer any readers. Just drop me a line to my email address of jeffplile@gmail.com. I’ll send you a prompt referral!

  8. I can refer for Chase Freedom.

  9. If I refer someone for the CSP, would they be able to get the 45,000 total points including the 5,000 for adding an authorized user? I don’t like referring people for a lesser amount than they could receive

  10. I can refer for Chase Freedom. schnike4@hotmail.com

  11. Daraius, the drop of gold status after spending $30K was upsetting to me. I got both cards with the bonuses last Fall and decided to cancel one. After talking to Amex, I decided to cancel the business card. I just spent $30K on the personal one. I just called SPG – and they were wonderful. They granted me gold status for one year only. In the meantime, I called Amex and they reinstated my business card and are sending me a new one in the mail. I will go ahead and cancel my personal card instead. Thanks for the heads up and just an fyi in case anyone else is in this situation.
