You earn credit towards elite status at Marriott and promotional bonuses when paying with gift cards.

But you can NOT use the gift cards for to pay for deposits or advance purchase rates on the Marriott website or other websites, so you may not be saving that much because the pre-paid rates are usually the lowest rates.
