Do you like surprises?

This weekend only, you can save extra on already discounted hotel rooms when you book through TravelPony.  But (surprise!) you won’t see how much of a discount you’ll get until you enter the promotion code “JUNEMYSTERY” on the final booking screen.

You do NOT have to actually book a room to see the discount.  So you can see if it’s worth it for you without actually committing to the purchase!

The sale is active from now until June 9, 2014 at 12:00 am Pacific Time (3:00 am Eastern Time).  And there doesn’t seem to be a limit on which dates you can book.

Another TravelPony Flash Sale…but This Time, the Discount Is a Surprise!

Is This a Good Deal?

Link:   My Review of TravelPony

This could be a great deal if you need to pay for a hotel anyway and are able to find a discounted hotel on TravelPony.  If you don’t have enough points or are saving your points for a more expensive room, TravelPony is a good option for paid hotel stays.

TravelPony says they offer discounts of 10% to 70% off regular hotel rates.  I checked to see if this was true and much of the time, TravelPony has the cheapest rates.  With the mystery discount, you could save even more.

TravelPony Has Hotels in Most Major Cities

While TravelPony says they have hotels in over 3,000 cities, sometimes their hotel selection is minimal.  You can usually find a hotel in major cities, so if you’re not picky about brand, this could be a good deal for you.

Note:  It’s still worth shopping around to make sure you get the cheapest room, because sometimes other sites cost less.

Also, remember you usually will NOT get elite status credit (and benefits) if you book through TravelPony.  If you do, consider it a bonus!

What Kind of Discount Might You Get?

I checked TravelPony in a couple of cities to see what kind of discount I could get.

1.   Radisson Hotel & Suites Austin Downtown

TravelPony has the Radisson Hotel & Suites Austin Downtown for $169 a night plus tax on Septmber 8, 2014.

The Radisson Hotel & Suites in Austin Costs $169 per Night Plus Tax

I entered the code “JUNEMYSTERY” in the promo code box and got a discount of $11.83.  That’s 7% off the regular rate of $169.  The total price including tax came to ~$183.  You can get a full refund if you cancel more than 72 hours prior to arrival.

On This Booking, You’d Save an Additional 7%

I searched for the same room on Kayak.  The cheapest room I found was at Amoma.com for $188 including tax.  But it’s a non-refundable room.  And you’ll save ~$5 by booking with TravelPony.

2014-06-06_10-54-29

Amoma Is a Little More Expensive Than TravelPony, and It’s a Non-Refundable Room

As a final comparison, I checked for the same room on the Radisson website.  A non-refundable advance purchase room costs ~$229 including taxes.  So the TravelPony rate is a very good deal.  Because you’ll save ~$46 and get a refundable room.

Radisson Charges ~$229 for the Same Room!

2.   Doubletree by Hilton Newark Airport

On October 1, 2014, the Doubletree by Hilton Newark Airport costs $135 a night plus tax on TravelPony.

You’ll Pay $135 Plus Tax at the DoubleTree Hotel Newark Airport

Again, I entered the code “JUNEMYSTERY” in the promo code box and got a discount of $9.45.  That’s 7% off the regular rate of $135.  The total price including tax came to ~$147.  This is also a refundable room, as long as you cancel more than 72 hours prior to arrival.

Another 7% Discount With TravelPony!

A search for the same room on Kayak found the cheapest rate through HotelClub, at ~$249.  It’s also a refundable room, but you can cancel up until 6:00 pm the day before arrival without penalty.  In this case, booking through TravelPony saves you ~$102! That’s a great deal!

TravelPony Saves You ~$102 Compared to Kayak and HotelClub

Just to compare, I searched for the same room on the Hilton website.  They’re charging ~$254 including tax for a fully refundable room.  So you truly do save a lot with TravelPony.

2014-06-06_11-16-55

Hilton Charges Even More for the Same Room

I’m not sure if I’d get a 7% discount on every booking, or if it varies depending on the hotel.  I did log into Emily’s TravelPony account to see what discount she would get on the same hotels.  She also got 7%.  But your discount might be different!

Haven’t Signed-Up for TravelPony?

Link:   Sign-Up for TravelPony

If you haven’t signed-up for TravelPony yet, new members can get a $35 discount (promotion code) on a booking of at least $200.  This is my link, so when you join I’ll get $25 and you’ll get $35 to use on a booking.  Then, refer your friends and family and they’ll get the $35 and you’ll get $25.

If you sign-up directly on TravelPony, you’ll just get $25.

Refer a Friend:  They’ll Get $35 and You’ll Get $25

Note:   You can NOT stack the $35 discount with the mystery sale.  The site will only let you use 1 promo code.  But you can stack the 10% code with any $25 referral credits you have in your account.

Book on TravelPony with your Chase Sapphire Preferred to earn 2X Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  Or use your Barclaycard Arrival Plus to get 2.2% cash back.

Bottom Line

TravelPony is having a mystery sale this weekend.  You’ll save money on already cheap rooms, but the amount of the discount is a surprise!

Use the promotion code “JUNEMYSTERY” to see how much you’ll save.  You don’t need to book the room to see the discount.

TravelPony’s hotel rates are already discounted, so an extra discount makes a good deal even better!  But definitely shop around before you book to confirm you’re getting the best deal.

Please let me know in the comments if you get a good deal with this sale!

  1. Thanks for sharing this – every little bit of discount helps!

  2. I saved a ton of money on 4 rooms for 5 nights in WPB over the winter holidays at a highly rated Wyndham property – my stepmother is having a 70th birthday so I bought a block of rooms. Cost on websites were $120-140 but we paid $93/night. The only negative is that your credit card is charged immediately and not at time of arrival. Thank you!

  3. Thank you!!!! I was able to save $200 off an existing reservation! Mystery code gave me a $68 discount.

In my humble opinion, this website is not good:

    – very hard to do searches (e.g., can’t narrow down by map),
    – very limited hotel selection,

Also, I believe you can get far better hotels at far better prices using either hotwire or priceline, if you know what you are doing.

  5. Gee, another “deal” which is really just a referral scheme.

  6. To all the Naysayers: Thanks to MillionMileSecrets, I just found out about TravelPony. Went through the link to sign on to see what price I could get on a specific hotel in Minneapolis that I have tried to get into at a better price than over $200 a night. Even with my Carlson card, my State Government rate, my Senior Rate, and my AARP, I could never get a rate lower than $175. Well, to my surprise, I just booked this hotel through TravelPony for $120! WOWSERS!!! Bottom line: like Travelocity, Expedia, etc., you will have to pay up front. Also, it helps to know your hotel ahead of time and shop around first.

  7. I just booked a Mercure hotel through Amoma, can i still utiliste my platinum Accor benefits that i get with the amex platinum charge card?

  8. Glad everyone could get discounted hotel stays!

@micky – They usually don’t honor elite benefits unless you book through the hotel website. But it doesn’t hurt to ask!
