Today Only: Save Money On IHG Points!

You Can Save Money Buying IHG Points for ~0.6 Cents!

The Daily Getaways website will have a new deal every weekday at 1:00 pm Eastern Time from May 19, 2014, until June 20, 2014.

However, you have to be quick to get in on these deals because they sell out within minutes!

You get an extra 10% off when you use an American Express issued credit or charge card.  This includes cards like the American Express Platinum personal or business card, the Starwood hotel personal or business card, or the Delta personal or business card.

Note:  American Express gift cards aren’t eligible for the 10% discount, but some folks have reported Bluebird cards are eligible.

IHG Points

You can buy IHG points from .63 to ~.67 cents per point, with the best rate for purchasing 100,000 IHG points.

You can buy up a maximum of 16 packages of IHG points.

IHG normally sells points for ~1.2 to ~1.3 cents per point.  If you use the Cash & Points trick, you can buy IHG points for .7 cents per points.

With this deal, you’re buying IHG points for .63 to ~.67 cents per point.  So you’d save as much as ~.67 cents per IHG point (~1.3 cents per IHG point – as low as .63 cents per point with this deal).

And you’d save up to .07 cents per point compared to using the Cash & Points trick (.7 cents per point with the Cash & Points trick – as low as .63 cents per point with this deal).

So it could be worth it if you’re not comfortable with the Cash & Points trick!

You can use IHG points at any IHG brand hotel:

IHG points can be transferred to certain airlines at a 1:5 ratio, but this is expensive and not a good deal.

Buying points could make sense if you use them for:

1.   Holiday Inn Paris – Versailles – Bougival

One night at the Holiday Inn Paris – Versailles – Bougival on November 29, 2014, costs 15,000 points or ~$124.

Buying 15,000 points for $100 and booking with those IHG points saves you ~$24 (~$124 hotel cost – $100 IHG point purchase cost).

If you use your American Express card, you’ll save an extra 10% on the cost of the IHG points.  So you would save ~$34 (~$124 hotel cost – $100 IHG point purchase cost – $10 discount for using an American Express card that gets a 10% discount).

Buying Points Now Saves You Money Later

Even if you booked a non-refundable rate through Kayak, buying points saves you ~$2 (~$122 hotel cost on Kayak – $100 IHG point purchase cost).  And you can get your points back if you cancel.

2.   InterContinental New York Times Square

One night at the InterContinental New York Times Square on October 11, 2014, costs 50,000 points or ~$526.  The cash price is the same if you booked through Kayak.

Buying 50,000 points for $325 and booking the same room with IHG points saves you ~$201 (~$526 hotel cost – $325 IHG point purchase cost).

If you use your American Express card, you’ll save an extra 10% on the cost of the IHG points.  So you would save ~$234 (~$526 hotel cost – $325 IHG point purchase cost – ~$33 discount for using an American Express card to get the 10% discount).

3.   InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco

Two nights at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco on November 29, 2014, costs 100,000 points (50,000 points x 2) or ~$1,006.  The cash price is about the same if you booked through Kayak.

Buying 100,000 points for $630 and booking with those IHG points saves you ~$376 (~$1,006 hotel cost – $630 IHG point purchase cost).

If you use your American Express card, you’ll save an extra 10% on the cost of the IHG points.  So you would save ~$439 (~$1,006 hotel cost – $630 IHG point purchase cost – ~$63 discount for using an American Express card to get the 10% discount).

You Would Save Almost Half Price

Bottom Line

You could save money buying IHG points through the Daily Getaways instead of paying cash.  Buying IHG points could be cheaper than paying cash for a hotel if you used them for PointBreaks where hotel nights start at 5,000 points or in cities such as New York, Paris, or Rome where hotels are expensive.

But be sure to do the math to see if buying points makes sense for you.

  1. you don’t really have to be quick… the same offer was around last week and 3 out of 4 packages are still available from the promo… my guess is this one will sell even slower.

  2. Great post – if you want to take advantage of any of the IHG PointBreaks, but don’t have very many (or any) IHG points in your account, buying points through this deal is a much better deal than trying to transfer them over from Chase Ultimate Rewards

  3. You can always get the points at .7 each, so this represents a tiny discount. So this is certainly a decent deal if you’re planning a lot of IHG travel and want to save some money on it, but nothing to really race out and try to be sure to be fast with for speculative points accumulation.

  4. Not really “Today Only” as Lantean has pointed out, last week’s IHG offer did not sell out. In fact, you can still purchase last week’s deal right now. Today’s deal will be around a while.
