Emily Jablon:   Daraius and I went to Maui, Hawaii in March 2013.  We loved Hawaii so much that we decided to return, but this time to Kauai.  Kauai is more laid back and less built-up than Maui.

A few years ago I had a great experience as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kathmandu, Nepal. I happened to mention to the owner of a travel agency in Kathmandu that I was a retired teacher and loved working with kids. He had helped me organize my trekking plans in Nepal and asked what I planned to do with the 5 days I had before starting off to the mountains. Before I could answer, he suggested a 5-day “free” stay at an orphanage. The next day I was working with young boys practicing English and playing soccer. Those were 5 fantastic days.

  2. I’ve never had a volunteer experience while on vacation, but would be open to one if the timing worked out.

  3. I’d like to do something easy to accomplish such as pick up trash along the beach.

  4. I’ve never done a travel volunteer job but would be open to one. I think it would be fun to do work with the entire family combining a vacation with volunteerism!

  5. I caught the travel bug while living in South Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer. So, my two years were full of volunteer projects with great travel during school holidays! I haven’t done a lot of volunteer work in my travels since then but I’d like to do something with children.

I have never volunteered while in vacation. My vacation usually is 2 – 3 days trip, but I still can find time for it if I really want. I will try next time, maybe taking care of the animals at the shelter.

  14. while not volunteering, per se, i visited an orphanage in vietnam, bringing school supplies, and visiting with the children.

  15. Been to Hawaii 20 + times from east coast. Don’t bother with Kauai unless hike the trail in remote nort side, Big Island only for Manta Rays and turtles and dolphin swims, Oahu for nothing unless you love crowds and then why bother going to Hawaii, Maui is the only go to island. The others maybe worth a quick day trip to,

  16. Heading to the Grand Hyatt Kauai in the fall. Maybe we can adopt a pet too?

  17. I want to volunteer to release sea turtles.

  18. When I was a college student, I took a trip to Italy as a volunteer for an archaeological dig. It was a lot of manual work (digging, pick axing, etc.), but I will never forget the experience. I still have friends from all over the world from that trip.

  29. I’m a physician in training, and after I am done with my training I am planning on joining doctors without borders in calcutta. I’m really searching for a meaningful way to use my education, and I don’t want to draw politics into this post, though I just feel like we’ve lost sight of so much of what’s really important in life through our never ending political health care battle in the US.

  30. I have not had the chance to volunteer on a trip but I would like to go with my fiancee who is a high school Biology and Chemistry teacher abroad to educate children who do not have the resource to get education. When we get older, we may even consider living oversea to do that.

  34. No matter what the question–Kauai is the answer!
