Emily Jablon:  Daraius and I went to Maui, Hawaii in March 2013.  We loved Hawaii so much that we decided to return, but this time to Kauai.  Kauai is more laid back and less built-up than Maui.

Things To Do In Kauai

Taking in the View at Sprouting Horn Park, Kauai

We went to Kauai over Valentine’s Day week, which made for a very romantic getaway.  Using our miles and points made it even better!

Winter Getaway to Kauai – Trip Report Index:

We have further divided the activities based on the sides of the island in which they are located.  Unfortunately, we did not make it to the North side because of the heavy rains, so please comment if you have been to the North side and have not-to-miss recommendations!

Southside Kauai Activities

Spouting Horn Beach Park

We went to see a blowhole, located on the south side at the Spouting Horn Beach Park.

Watching the Waves Crashing Into the Black Lava Rock Was Breathtaking!

This was cool to see, but I would have liked to get a little bit closer to the action.  However, we read that it can be dangerous to get closer because of the forceful impacts of the shooting water.

The views were very pretty, though!

We also went to Poipu Beach Park, which is great little beach area.  There is a small lagoon where it’s safe for little children to swim.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Pools

I was looking forward to spending a day at the pools!

The pools at the Grand Hyatt Kauai are fantastic.  They meander throughout the property, which makes them very fun to explore. There is an adult pool, a freshwater pool, and a kids’ pool. There is a series of swimming pools that are joined with interconnected pools, and even a saltwater pool with sand. There is a slide for kids, and several Jacuzzis.

You could rent private cabanas.  If you are a Hyatt Diamond member, you can even select a pool cabana as your diamond amenity.

I didn’t rent a cabana, but I did rent an inner tube and floated throughout the entire pool.  It was so much fun!

Laying out by the pool was relaxing, and I curled up with a good book and magazines.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Beach

The beach was located just steps away from the resort.  However, the beach had unsafe swimming because of the high winds and strong currents.

Spa at the Grand Hyatt

My last day at the Grand Hyatt, I went to the hotel spa.

Entrance to the Anara Spa at the Grand Hyatt

At first, I thought I’d try a HydraFacial, but then thought it might be too invasive, so I stuck with a regular facial. With Daraius’ encouragement, I added on a 25 minute massage.

He said I needed to treat myself, so I did.  I decided to try a facial (the 2nd in my life!) and I added on a 35 minute massage.

I got to the spa an hour early to check out the facilities.  The facilities were okay.  It was a bit impersonal and dated.  There was a dry sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, and lap pool.

I enjoyed my facial and massage.  The ladies who provided them were very friendly and warm.  I felt like I had met 2 new friends on the island!

Bottom Line

  3. Thanks for bringing us back to the GHK. We loved the pools so much that we dedicated a day to staying on the property and enjoying them. Ten trips down the water slide, floating down the lazy river (and hitting both of the “hidden coves” under the waterfalls, and ending with dinner at a waterside table in Tidepools. Prob our funnest hotel of all time!

  4. Did you notice the people cliffdiving at Shipwreck beach? You can seem them from the cabanas. I agree the water is rocky though, so I went swimming by the Sheraton Poipu instead.

  5. @ DBest- Yes, we did notice that! I’m too chicken to dive off of cliffs though…maybe in my younger days!
