You can usually get 20,000 FlexPerks points when you spend $3,500 within 150 days on the US Bank FlexPerks card. But now (in addition to the sign-up bonus), you also get extra points for each Olympic medal the US team wins! My affiliate link doesn’t get you these extra points so use the link below.
All you have to do is sign-up for the US Bank FlexPerks card between January 31, 2014 to March 7, 2014 and make your first purchase by March 31, 2014. This offer was last seen during the previous Olympic games, so now’s a good time to get the card if you’ve been thinking of getting it.
How the Points Add Up
You get extra points deepening on how many medals the US Olympic team wins.
- Gold medal = 500 points
- Silver medal = 250 points
- Bronze medal = 100 points
As of February 14, 2014, the US teams’ medal count is 4 gold, 2 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
- 4 gold x 500 points = 2,000 points
- 2 silver x 250 points = 500 points
- 6 bronze x 100 points = 600 points
The Olympic games have started, but you already get an extra 3,100 bonus points (2,000 gold points + 500 silver points + 600 bronze points). This is in addition to the 20,000 points you get for signing up for the card.
The Winter Olympics don’t end until February 23, 2014. So there is plenty of time left for the US team to win more medals. You could even wait to see how many medals the US team wins before you apply for the US Bank FlexPerks card. That’s because the offer is available until March 7, 2014!
Just to give you an idea of how the points can add up, the US won 9 gold, 15 silver, and 13 bronze medals during the last Olympics.
- 9 gold medals x 500 points = 4,500 points
- 15 silver medals x 250 points = 3,750 points
- 13 bronze medals x 100 points = 1,300 points
If they win the same number of medals, that would be 9,550 extra points (4,500 points for the gold medals + 3,750 points for the silver medals + 1,300 points for the bronze medals). That’s in addition to the 20,000 point sign-up bonus for a total of 29,550 points.
You can use your FlexPerks points for airfare, hotel, car rental, cruises, and merchandise.
30,000 Flex Points will get you:
- $600 or less worth or air tickets or
- $300 statement credit or
- $300 gift certificate towards hotels, car rentals, and cruises
You will get the most value from your points if you use them towards airfare. But do what makes sense for you!
US Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card
You will earn 20,000 points when you get the US Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards card. FlexPerks points are good because you have more flexibility. That’s because you can use your points on any airline and there are no black-out dates and other restrictions.
Other Card Benefits
- 3X points for charitable donations
- 2X points on your highest spending category (gas, groceries, or air travel)
- 2X points for most cell phone expenses
- 1X points on all other expenses
- $49 fee waived for the first year
However, you won’t get the maximum value out of your US Bank FlexPerk (based on the chart above) even if you redeem for flights.
For example, if you have 36,000 points you can only use 30,000 points towards a ticket that costs no more than $600. Firstly, it is hard to buy tickets which are exactly even round numbers! When was the last time you bought a ticket for exactly $400 or $600?
Secondly, you will have 6,000 points left over that are not good towards any flights because you have to have at least 20,000 miles to redeem for airfare.
Note: If you are not approved for the for the US Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards card, you may get the US Bank FlexPerks Select card which only offers a 10,000 point bonus.
If you sign-up, via this link, for a new US Bank FlexPerks card you will earn more points every time the US Olympic team wins a medal. This is a better offer than my link where you only get 20,000 bonus points.
This offer does not end until March 7, 2014, so you can apply after the Olympics end on February 23, 2014 so that you know exactly how many extra points you will get!
This is a great offer for folks who are looking for flexibility with their points. That is because you can use your US Bank points for tickets on any airline or for cruises.
If you are new to mile & point credit cards there are better offers such as the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® which offers a 40,000 point sign-up bonus which is worth ~$440. Or the Southwest or American Airlines cards.
