You can register all your cards up to 11:59 pm Mountain Standard Time on Saturday, November 30, 2013 as long as the registration limit is not reached.  So register your cards now!

I wrote more about Small Business Saturday in an earlier post, but you can register your American Express credit card, and those of authorized users (who have cards issued by American Express bank) because they have a separate card number.

That way both you and your authorized user can get the $10 statement credit for spending more than $10.

American Express Credit Cards Issued By American Express

You can register your American Express cards AND authorized user cards!

American Express cards have separate credit card numbers for authorized users which allows both the primary card holder and the authorized user to get the $10 credit.

So if you have the American Express Starwood card and your partner is an authorized user, BOTH of you will get the $10 statement credit for using your cards.

Be careful adding multiple authorized users to all your American Express cards,  so you don’t trigger a financial review.  Some folks who added many authorized users to their cards triggered a financial review of their account.

As authorized users on your card, your partner or children can still get the signup bonus if they apply for their own card.

You can add authorized users by calling the number on the back of your card or by logging on to your American Express account online.  There is usually no impact to your credit score by adding an authorized user.

American Express cards include Membership Rewards point earning cards, the Starwood & Hilton hotel cards, and Delta cards.

American Express Cards Issued By Other Banks Such As Citi Or Bank Of America

You can also register American Express cards issued by other banks, such as the Citi American Airlines American Express, Virgin Atlantic American Express, Penfed, Barclays, USAA etc.

Authorized user cards (for personal cards) issued by these banks will usually NOT get a separate $10 credit because authorized user cards usually have the same credit card number as the primary card holder.

But you will get the statement credit for an authorized user on a business American Express card (even if it is not issued directly from American Express such as the Citi American Airlines American Airlines) because they usually have a different credit card number.

That said, if the $10 statement credit does not automatically post to your account, it will be extremely hard to get the $10 credit from your issuing bank.

American Express Gift Cards, Bluebird & Corporate Cards

You won’t earn a statement credit on American Express gift cards, American Express Bluebird, or American Express corporate cards.

But you can get the statement credit with the American Express Serve card.

Here are the terms and conditions for the Small Business Saturday promotion from the American Express website.

  1. What if I can cancsl said Amex in a month (to avoid annual fees)? Sounds like I might not get the statement credit since it can take up to 90 days.

  2. My citi card with amex logo has too many numbers to register. What should I do?

  3. nm above comment :)

  4. Darius when does the credit post to your account? If you were buying gift cards it would not matter but if you were to use your AMEX card to pay for a item with a value of 10$ or more, would not you have to pay off the statement before the credit is applied?

  5. @Taylor @Eric Wolfe – It usually posts fairly quickly (sooner than 90 days).

  6. I would like to add a reminder here. Last year we used all five of our AMEX cards on small business day and had to call on three of them to get our credit. Here’s why. I’m not even sure all of these businesses KNOW they are participating. Several of mine didn’t post their days intake until the day after Small Business Day, so the date was off. Whenever I called the credit card company, however, the CSR could see I had made my purchase on Saturday and immediately gave me my credit.

    So just take note.

  7. I was able to register 10 separate Amex cards (six in one name and four in another) with one email address. They sent me one email acknowledging the activation of all 10. (It would’ve only been nine but I haven’t yet activated the new World MasterCard Elite version of my Bank of America Virgin Atlantic Amex which is still working). We plan on making (10) $10 transactions to get a $100 gift certificate from a local restaurant.

  8. Hey MMS, if I do multiple $10 transactions on one card, one after the other (consecutively), will I get more than one $10 statement credits?

  9. I do not use amex regularly. cannot use for this 10 bucks.

Good deals are thing of the past? Have not seen anything good lately.

  10. @cowboyguy I’m pretty sure that’s a no unless you use diff auth user cards

  11. waste of time, not worth it to me although between me and my husband we have 19 cards business and personal, all businesses listed in my area are not worth the effort

  12. Sorry, not sure if this makes sense. Why would anyone want to spend $10 to get $10 back? Only makes sense if it’s a purchase you have to make anyway like groceries or gas. Otherwise, I wouldn’t go out of my way to make any additional purchases.

  13. @matthewD – I’ve also not activated my BOA Virgin Atlantic MasterCard!

@cowboyguy – You’re limited to only 1 $10 statement credit per card unless you use an authorized user card which has a different credit card number.

  14. Its great that this is back! In my experience, the credit posts quickly (within a week). This is still good even though they lowered the credit, the previous couple of years were better though!

  15. Darius If I make purchase at multiple different small businesses. Do I get $10 at each store ?

  16. @Denis – Even if you shop at more than one small business on the map this Saturday, it’s only one $10 credit per Amex card number.

  17. 1) would amex serve card be eligible for this?

    2) also any gas stations to fill gas and use this credit on saturday? (last year they had few gas stations).

    Can u lemme know?

    thanks

  18. I just saw the $10 credit posted to my Fidelity 2% CB Amex today (posted on 12/03):

12/03/2013 AMERICAN EXPRESS COMPA – NEW YORK US -$10.00

I was lucky to find a gas station (American Petroleum) listed as a small business.
