I’ve written extensively about the Southwest 50,000 point cards and why this is the best time to get the cards.  And why it is the #1 offer in my Hot Deals tab.

This 50,000 point offer will end on Monday (via MileValue and emails from Southwest), but I expect it to come back at some point.

Southwest 50,000 Point Offer Ends Monday

Emily With Our Southwest Companion Pass!

All 4 versions of the Southwest credit cards currently offer 50,000 Southwest points after spending $2,000 within 3 months.

This offer ends on Monday, November 18, 2013.  And the Chase website says that the offer is available for only a limited time.

Scroll down the application page to see other versions of the offer.  Note that the Plus versions (at the bottom of the page) have a lower annual fee ($69) compared to $99 for the Premier version of the card.

The Southwest Companion Pass is one of the best ways to save money on airline tickets for travel within the US.  This is my favorite travel perk and is the number 1 offer on my Hot Deals list!

Why?  Because it lets a companion fly with you for free whenever you fly on Southwest.  And it doesn’t matter if you pay for your flight with points or cash – your companion flies free (~$10 in taxes and fees) either way!

You have to earn 110,000 Companion Pass qualifying points within 1 calendar year (January 1 to December 31st) to get the Companion Pass.

The 50,000 point bonus from the Southwest credit cards count towards the companion pass, which makes it very easy to earn the Southwest Companion Pass!

And Southwest has clarified that the 50,000 point sign-up bonus does count towards the Southwest Companion Pass.

Bottom Line

The Southwest Companion Pass is the best deal for travel within the US.  Now’s the best time to apply for any of the Southwest credit cards because all 4 versions offer a 50,000 point sign-up bonus which currently counts towards the Companion Pass.

And if you earn the companion pass in 2014 (see this post on how to time it right!), it is valid until the end of 2015.

That said, I wouldn’t worry about missing the offer, because I’m pretty sure that we’ll see the 50,000 point offer back at some point.

  1. I applies for my Southwest card, and naturally it won’t be to my house until next week or later. Do I have to spend $2,000 by 11/18? Only activate the card by 11/18? Or since I was approved yesterday, will I be fine?

Basically, what action needs to be taken by 11/18 to be eligible for the 50k miles? Thanks!

  2. The speculations are it ending monday at 11:59pm or sunday 11:59pm?

  3. Please, Southwest, end your 50,000 point offers so I can stop hearing about the companion pass! We get it, it’s awesome. I personally have one, but companion pass news has absolutely flooded the miles/points market over the past 2 months. Time to give it a rest

  4. I have already had one SWA personal credit card….Is this statement below accurate?

“This one-time bonus offer is valid only for first-time Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Credit Card cardmembers with new accounts. Previous and existing Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Card cardmembers/accounts are not eligible for this bonus offer. Note: the bonus may be earned on one first-time personal and one first-time business Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Card new account.”

    • @Jordan K – You just have to apply by November 18, 2013. You should complete the minimum spending in January so that the points post to your account in 2014 and your companion pass is valid until the end of 2015.

@Carlos – I’d guess that there will be links on the Southwest site until Monday evening.

@gussomer – I believe you won’t get the bonus for the same type of card again. There are 4 distinct versions of the card.

  5. So if you apply for a business card and a personal card you can combine for 100,000 points? Then earn/buy the other 10,000? Thanks.

  6. I’m trying to take advantage of the 50K SWA point THIS calendar year. Can you tell me (1) if it is possible (2) any “got-ya’s” I should be aware of and (3) would be better to wait until 2014 to earn the companion pass.

I already have a SWA Visa card where I have earned 58K in points (the hard way) valid towards earning a companion pass. On Friday I applied through this site 🙂 for a new SWA Visa (different kind than I currently have). I applied through a link on this site, was instantly approved but won’t receive the physical card for a week or so).

What do you think? Any advice?

    • @Chris – If you put the same Southwest frequent flyer number in the application, the points will go to the same account. Buying points doesn’t count towards the Companion Pass. But here are other ways to get the remaining 10K points.

@Sandra – Yes, it is possible, but you have to act VERY fast. Complete the $2K minimum spending (excluding the annual fee) as soon as possible on the new card and 10 days before your 1st statement closes so that the points post in December and you earn the Companion Pass in 2013. Don’t rely on the statement closing date online, but call Chase to ask when the 1st statement closes. Good luck and thanks for using our link!

  7. So in your experience, if I have applied for the premier card in the past and I apply for the plus card now (both personal). I should be able to get the 50,000 point bonus?

  8. Can I apply for both SW Plus and Premier or plus/premier & business card?

  9. After instant approval for the personal card last week, I was told my business premier card took additional consideration when I applied 2 days after the personal. Should I call tomorrow? Any tips?

  10. I applied for the business Southwest card today and was actually declined because I have the personal Southwest card (as of 10/28) and I did the Chase Ink Plus/Bold cards at the beginning of 2013. They said it was too many requests for credit. Is there any way to get around that decision? I was looking forward to getting the companion pass in early 2014.

  11. Can the Chase Ink card 50,000 Bonus points be transferred to Southwest and count as 50,000 SW Rapid Reward points toward the Southwest Companion Pass?

    • @Cory @Daniel – You should be able to do that.

@CT – I’d wait to get the letter in the mail.

@John – Banks are tightening up on applications for business cards. You could try again in 2014.

@Ralph Zappala – Transfered points do not count toward the companion pass.

  12. Hi!! I received my Chase SW Business premier card in June. I already received 50K points from that. I opened my Chase SW Personal plus card in October and I just hit the amount needed to spend to get the other 50K points. When would I get the companion pass??? Thanks for your help!

  13. Thanks for all of your help and guidance. 2 final questions:

    1) My approved personal card has a first closing date of Jan 15, 2014. If I spend the $2,000 in the next ~40 days, will both the 2,000 and 50,000 points post in 2014? Giving me 52,000 points toward a 2014 CP?

    2) Assuming that I am declined on the business card and don’t bother with reconsideration, what is the downside to applying for the personal premier card to complete the additional 50,000 points toward a 2014 CP?

  14. I received a notice in the mail from Chase that my business premier card had been denied due to too many credit requests at one time. I called the reconsideration line and after a few questions was approved. I look forward to completing the spending requirements in Jan/Feb as well as transferring AMEX -> Choice -> SWA to reach 110k. Thanks again for all of your guidance!

  15. Hi Darius.
I thought I understood this as that I need to get the cards and spend the 2,000 in 2 (or 3??) months to get 50,000 miles on each card? I got these cards and I may be misreading this, but am I supposed to spend the money now, or should i just go out the first few days of january and spend 2,000 on each?
I understand that the companion card is valid for the remaining of the year that I get it. I want it all of 2014 and 2015.
Also, some agent from SWA told me that the 50,000 mile rewards were given to you if you were approved by Nov. 18.
Regarding when my statement closing. Do I want to charge the money to be on a 2013 statement?
Thanks! I know this is confusing to some and annoying to others, so.. maybe they can just ignore this post?

  16. I tried posting this via my phone but not sure if it went through. I was accepted for the Personal bur denied business, I was going to call business card reconsideration line but wondered if I would still get 50K bonus since it has changed to 25K. I originally applied when it was 50K. This will of course impact the Companion Pass. Let me know if I should even try to do the business card. I am bummed as I I did not anticipate the card changing from 50K to 25K during the process.

  17. i have swa rapid personal and biz and ink i transferred 30000 miles ink
to add to my miles, 46 personal, 50000 swa biz transferring 16 dec 2013,
after swa inquired chase for verify, 96 plus 30 thousand but no domestic
one way booked, do i have to apply now for my companion pass, my whole
goal was for companion pass, will it then be used in 2014, just received, renewal charge for swa personal, should i apply now for new cards for the bonus miles, want to learn to churn, used your link, thank you.

  18. Anyone has any idea how long does it take the 50000 bonus miles to post in the Southwest account after reaching the $2000 spending?

    • @Bill H – You get the bonus based on what the bonus was when you applied. But confirm when you call to activate the card.

@james – Transfered points from Ultimate Rewards do NOT count towards the Companion Pass. But transfer from Ultimate Rewards to hotels and then to Southwest seems to count.

@Gad – It should post when your next statement closes if you completed the minimum spending within 8 to 10 days before your statement due date.

  19. My statement closed on the 7th and I didn’t complete the minimum spending until the 1st or the 2nd of the month. I didn’t see the bonus miles on the 7th statement… so I guess I’ll have to wait til the statement on the following month?
