Million Mile Secrets reader Anna emails with a question:

What is the best business card offer from American Express right now?  I thought the 50k membership rewards for the gold card was still around but I must be mistaken cause I couldn’t find it.

Where Is the 50,000 Point Offer?

Business Cards

Update:   This offer is no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

Anna wanted to apply for The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN  because there was a 50,000 point signup bonus (expired).

But the current bonus is ZERO 25,000 Membership Rewards points!

This card alternates between a zero and 50,000 point (expired) sign-up bonus, so you’re better off waiting for the 50,000 point offer (expired) to return.

Anna doesn’t have to be incorporated to get a business card.  She can get a business card if she’s a sole proprietor (1-person business) or a partnership.  Anna can even get business credit cards for a business she’s starting.

My post, 3 ways you may qualify as a business, describes examples of qualifying businesses.  And here’s a post on how to fill out an American Express business card application.

But she shouldn’t lie on her application!

Business cards won’t affect Anna’s personal credit score much because the business card credit line and spending are usually NOT reported to the personal credit bureaus, unless she doesn’t pay her bills.

Anna will get a credit inquiry on her credit report, but most business cards won’t report balances to credit bureaus (so it won’t appear on her credit report) unless she misses payments.

American Express Business cards are part of the OPEN Savings program.  So Anna can get up discounts of up to 10% or up to 4 Membership Rewards points on every $1 spent at participating OPEN Savings partners.

Anna can also register her American Express business cards for Small Business Saturday and get a $10 statement credit after a $10 purchase on each American Express card.

1.  Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express

Link:   Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express

Anna can get a 25,000 signup bonus if she applies for the Starwood Preferred Guest Business card.

She gets 25,000 points after she spends $5,000 in the first 3 months.

The $95 annual fee is waived the first year.

Anna can use Starwood hotel points to stay in Starwood hotels or to transfer to certain airlines.

2.  The Business Platinum Card from American Express

Update: This offer is no longer available.

Anna can get 25,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 in the first 3 months on the Business Platinum card.

She can also transfer Membership Rewards points to airline partners and redeem for flights.  But most partners charge fuel surcharges on international awards and they vary by the partner airline.

Anna will pay a $450 annual fee but it could be worth it because of the benefits and no foreign transaction fees when used internationally.

Anna can get a $200 airline credit which can be used for baggage fees, onboard purchases, and gift cards.  This credit is per calendar year so Anna can get the credit in 2013 and in 2014!

She’ll also get a $100 credit towards the Global Entry fee which will make it quicker to clear customs and immigration when she enters the US.  And she’ll get free access to Delta Airlines airport lounges along with Starwood hotels Gold status.

Anna can also get free Hilton Gold status valid through December 2014.

If Anna isn’t in a hurry to get the Business Platinum card, it might be worth waiting to see if the 100,000 signup bonus returns.  Or increases to at least 50,000 points.

She should also consider The Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Mercedes-Benz personal (not business) card which has a higher sign-up bonus of 50,000 points instead of the business Platinum card with the lower bonus.

Bottom Line

The best current business card offer from American Express is the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Card.

The Business Platinum card has only a 25,000 point sign-up bonus, so it could worth waiting to see if there is a higher bonus.  Or if Anna gets a targeted offer for a higher bonus.

  1. I had the business platinum AMEX and cancelled it about one year ago. Am I eligible for the Mercedes Benz sign-up bonus as a different product?

  2. Hi Daraius. I’m reading conflicting info on the Mercedes Benz $200 reimbursements for travel gift cards. I’m sure MMMV, but any advice on where to buy the gift cards so that reimbursement is triggered? Thanks!

  3. I just got a letter from Amex for 75,000 points if I apply for Business Gold Card. What can Amex points convert to? I can’t find your link…
