I wrote about Southwest’s fare sale yesterday, with flights starting at $49.
Other airlines are now matching the sale prices!
United and American Airlines are matching Southwest’s $49 and up fare sale.
The terms of Southwest’s fare sale, don’t include Friday or Sunday flights so the sale isn’t all that great for a quick weekend trip.
For example, you can fly on Southwest from Houston to New Orleans for $48 each way or about ~$96 for a roundtrip.
United appears to match Southwest’s prices from Houston to New Orleans with their $97 roundtrip flights.
Similarly, Southwest has flights from Denver to Los Angeles for $88 each way or ~$196 for a round-trip.
Or you could fly on United for the same price – ~$176
Southwest has $149 one-way flights from Chicago to Las Vegas.
American Airlines has matched that price an has one way flights for ~$149 or roundtrip flights for ~$298.
I also found American Airlines flights for $149 one way from Chicago to or from Fort Lauderdale.
In some cases, other airlines aren’t matching perfectly. For example, you can fly on American Airlines from Austin to Dallas for $110 or ~ $12 more than Southwest.
If the flight timings are more convenient or if you’re trying to maintain elite status with American Airlines, paying $12 more could be worth it to you.
United and American Airlines are matching the Southwest fare sale up to October 10, 2013. I still find some of these prices high, but the flights are cheaper than what they would otherwise be.
So if Southwest doesn’t have any discounted seats left for where you want to fly, you may be able to get the same price (or close to the same price) by flying on United or American Airlines.
And in some cases, you may even be able to find discounted fares on the weekends!
