I wrote about Starwood hotel’s “Nights and Flights” awards, but wanted to show how a couple can get just 1 card each and use it for flights and a stay at the Walt Disney Dolphin or Walt Disney Swan hotel in Disney World!

You Can See Mickey At Disney World Using Points!

Nights & Flights

Through September 3, 2013, you get an extra 5,000 points per card (compared to the normal offer of 25,000 points) with the Starwood 30,000 point personal and 30,000 point business card after spending $5,000 within 6 months.

Nights & Flights is a great redemption for long category 3 and 4 hotel stays.

5 free hotel nights AND 50,000 airline miles will cost you:

This may seem like a lot of Starwood points, but remember that you will get 35,000 Starwood points (30,000 from the sign-up bonus and 5,000 for the minimum spending) with either the personal or business Starwood card once you complete the minimum spending requirements.

Don’t forget that you can transfer Starwood points for free (as long as you share the same address), so your partner could apply for 1 card and you could apply for 1 card and you’d have 70,000 Starwood points!

How To Book

You have to book Nights & Flights awards on the phone because they can’t be booked online.

Just call Starwood hotels at 888-625-4988 and tell them that you want to book a “Nights & Flights” award.  They will book the hotel portion of your trip for 5 nights and transfer 50,000 miles to your selected airline.

You then have to use miles from your airline account to book your flights to get to DisneyWorld.

Use 60,000 or 70,000 Starpoints For 5 Nights + Airfare For 2

Starwood has two hotels inside the Disney park –  the Walt Disney World Dolphin and the Walt Disney World Swan.

The Walt Disney World Dolphin and the Walt Disney World Swan are Category 4 hotels, so you can redeem 70,000 Starwood points for 5 nights AND get 50,000 airline miles.

50,000 American Airlines or US Air miles will get you 2 coach round-trip tickets within the US. The 50,000 air miles are deposited into your airline account and you can use them however you want.  Here’s a post on how to book awards within the US on American Airlines.

Note that you can get another 50,000 miles with the Citi American Airlines card or 35,000 US Air miles with the Barclays US Air card, so just 3 cards should be enough for more than 2 people to fly tDisney World and stay there for 5 nights!

Flights

It costs $771 for 2 coach round-trip tickets from Kansas City to Orlando.  If you use the Nights and Flights option, you will get 50,000 miles deposited into your airline account.  And you use miles from your airline account to book your flights.

It costs 25,000 miles for a low-level round-trip award within the US.  It might be hard to find flights to Orlando during peak travel periods, so be flexible and plan ahead.

Don’t forget that you can transfer Starwood hotel points for free to anyone who shares the same address with you.

  1. Just wanted to add that a big draw back of those hotels are that you are not eligible to purchase a Disney dining plan so any character dining would be done paying the inflated non plan rate at the restaurant.

  2. Didn’t know those Disney hotels could be booked with Starwood points. Don’t have a lot of Starwoods normally where I have to travel, but do travel Orlando from time to time. Thanks for the walk-through.

  3. Nice! I didn’t know those were Starwood! If I flew in to visit just Disney’s parks I would not even consider a car rental! With the Swan or Dolphin charging $15 a day and each park charging $15 a day your looking at some hefty fees! Swan and Dolphin are included to use all of Disney’s magical transportation (not sure about airport transport though).
However, if you plan to hit up Universal or Sea World you will need a car or cab!

  4. If you stay at any of the Disney Resort Hotels, they will provide transportation via Disney magic Shuttles to and from the hotel.

  5. This very topic was the reason I got into the whole points game. I had read about someone doing this on the DISboards and then got totally hooked on points and miles. You can’t beat a free Disney vacation, especially with amazing proximity to Epcot and Hollywood Studios!

  6. Just as a note…Swan and Dolphin resorts are not included in the Disney Magical Express service. Both resorts are located on Disney property, but are not Disney resorts, so the airport transportation is not included in the price. So to fly and stay at either resort you will need to provide your own transportation both to and from the airport. Here’s a link from Disney regarding this:

Stayed at the Swan with my family of 5. Not a family friendly hotel, it is made for businessmen and conventioneers. Cold and impersonal, not Disney like at all, don’t let the topiary fool you. Spend money on a Disney run property on the Monorail e.g. Polynesian.

  8. OOC, Could you use Nights and Flights to book the hotel for 5 nights, and get 50k airline miles deposited into your FF account, then drive to Disney and therefore, essentially, get the 5 nights for 10-20k overall points/miles (-60k or -70k Starpoints, +50k airline miles)? 20k for 5 nights at a Disney property hotel seems like a good deal :)

  9. Great post! We will definitely consider this for a Disney trip. What a good idea.

  10. (Joke) My 5 year old nephew has been wanting to go to Disneyworld for a long. I just need him to sign up for this card and spend $5000. That will be easy. :)

  11. The “Friendship Boats” also go to Hollywood Studios (I think the stops are Epcot –> Boardwalk Resort ( –> Beach/Yacht Club Resort –> Swan/Dolphin –> Hollywood Studios and back around again, but I may have one or two out of order) I seem to remember the boat stop being between the two hotels, so you can use it if you’re staying at the Swan, as well.

And alll of these stop are within walking distance, if you prefer to go that route.

Lots of info about both hotels here:

  12. Thanks Daraius. I am confused a bit about this for what I want to do. Please let me know. I already have 60K or 70K SPG points. I already have my flights booked to Kauai in March ’14. Can I book 5 nights in a Kauai SPG hotel and use this (flights/nights) deal to get 50K AA/US miles even though I am not using the miles for my flights? If yes, would it be a good value of SPG points or should I save them for sometime later. I have to anyways book hotel nights in Kauai so wondering if this gives me free airmiles as a perk…

  13. Thank you, Daraius. Can one person apply for the personal and the business card?

  14. Seems to me you’d just take the Disney Express from the airport to one of the participating hotels, then on-property transport to your hotel. “Does the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin provide transportation to Disney attractions? Yes, Walt Disney World provides complimentary, scheduled transportation From the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin throughout the Walt Disney World® Resort.”

  15. Bit of a Disney World nerd here. I can clarify some things in some of the comments:

@Chris: You are correct you cannot get the dining plan. However, do the math. The dining plan is not that great of a deal…especially if you don’t have kids between the ages of 3 and 9.

@Jacki: I believe parking at the parks is free if you stay at the Swan or Dolphin. However, there is a fee for parking at the hotel. I don’t think a car is necessary anyway. You can take a cab to the resort from the hotel and get around on Disney transportation while on Disney property.

@Lisa: You need a reservation at a Disney hotel to be able to take Magical Express to and from the airport. If you wanted to extend your stay and didn’t mind hotel hopping, you could bookend your Swan or Dolphin stay with a stay at one of Disney’s value resorts and get the free airport transportation.

  16. Cindy and Rick

We applied for and received our Starwood card before the 30K deal. Too bad we missed it. I cannot imagine us both getting Starwood cards.

  17. Thanks to everyone for the first-hand Disney tips!

@David – You sure can! You don’t have to use the miles transferred to your account to get to Disney and can use them however you want. You end up paying 30K points for 5 nights at Disney hotels.

  18. @HsInAz – The Kuai SPG hotel isn’t a category 3 or 4 hotel, so you can’t use the Nights and Flights award for the Kauai hotel.

  19. Inaccurate to advise that upgrade opportunities at the Swan are lower since the number of total rooms is lower at this property. Upgrade opportunities at both properties are about equal since the percentage of upgradeable rooms as a % to total inventory is about the same at each hotel. Neither location offers a better (or worse) shot at an upgrade.

  20. Daraius, I just wanted to thank you for going out of your way to put together scenarios like this. I was aware of the 30,000 point bonus, but never thought about using it at Disney. I also wasn’t aware of nights and flights. My family is now making plans for two exciting vacations and you have 4 commissions coming your way. Keep up the great work!
