Million Mile Secrets reader goals^n^dreams commented on an old post on the American Express Starwood Hotel (SPG) 30,000 point signup bonus :

When will 30000 bonus come back again? do you know? I am waiting for this!

I don’t have any inside information, but the American Express Starwood Hotel (SPG) 30,000 point signup bonus has always appeared in the 2nd half of the year.

Starwood Preferred Guest Includes 9 Different Hotel Chains

Starwood Preferred Guest hotels includes AloftElementFour PointsLe MeredienSheraton,  St Regis,  The Luxury CollectionWestin and W brand hotels.

Here’s when the 30,000 point American Express Starwood hotel offer has previously appeared:

  • 2010 – June 30, 2010
  • 2011 – July 2011
  • 2012 – August 2012

Perhaps it will come back in a different month, so in September, October, November or December this year.  Or perhaps it will come back in the same month, so either June, July or August.

Or not at all, though I suspect that AMEX has to increase their sign-up bonuses to stay competitive with the other card issuers, so we may see some new offers.  Marketers are fairly predictable, so if we know that something has worked well in the past, we’re eager to bring it back!

The current bonus for the Starwood Preferred Guest personal and business card is 25,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 within the first 6 months.

You earn 2 points per $1 spent at Starwood hotels and resorts with the Starwood Preferred Guest card from American Express.  You also earn 1 Starpoint for each dollar spent everywhere else.

Starwood hotel points transfer to over 29 airlines including American, British Airways & Delta.  And you get a 5,000 bonus when you transfer 20,000 Starpoints to partner airlines.

Cash & Points greatly increases the value of SPG points, because it lets you pay for a hotel stay using fewer points, but with a nominal cash supplement.

BOTTOM LINE

There are no guarantees that the Starwood 30,000 point offer will return.  But if you were planning on applying for the Starwood Preferred Guest card from American Express and can wait for a few months, you could get an extra 5,000 Starwood points!

  1. I love your blog Daraius, but I think this is a bit ahead of itself. I think anybody who wants to get the SPG card should just do it. Especially if you have a Bluebird card. As long as the 30,000 offer comes out about a month or later you’ll still win. 25,000 + 5,000 in BB spend is the 30,000 points. So in reality I would say don’t delay. Get it now. Every month you wait you are losing 5,000 points from any card.

  2. Not sure how you were so far off in 2011.
The 30k promo went live in July 2011, not November.

  3. Last year you wrote how you thought the Spg card was overrated. with all the recent devaluations of hotel points, is this still your opinion?,or has Spg gone up in your eyes? Thanx.

  4. In 2012 I am almost certain it was in late July/early August

    • @IPG – That is true, but not everyone uses Bluebird!

      @Steve – Oops. Thanks.

@glasses – SPG points are still valuable, but the card doesn’t have as many benefits as other hotel cards – i.e. it still charges foreign transaction fees and you don’t get a free night for keeping the card after the 1st year.

  5. SPG is a mediocre card/program. Cannot believe it remains so popular. There are much better cards to put in your wallet.

PRG is head and shoulders a better card. $30K spend can get you 75K MRs (using 2x at grocery and getting the 15K bonus with $30K spend). While same $30K spend will only get you a maximum of 35K SPG if transferred to airlines (ie less than half the number of points for same $ of spend). And it gets even worse for SPG if you take advantage of MR transfer bonuses to various airlines (like the recent 35% transfer bonus to Avios).

If you want hotel points, Carlson and Hilton offer better low/mid tier redemptions, while Hyatt offers vastly better top tier (plus has the advantage of being an UR transfer partner where you can churn at 5x for some fast points).

Finally, Amex offers many cards that earn MRs, so you can build points fast. PRG also has occasional 50K signup bonus offers, while the best SPG gets is a paltry 30K.

SPG relegates you to lousy hotel redemptions and mediocre airline redemptions. A lose-lose.

  6. SPG allows you to use points to purchase airline tickets and sometime that has been the only way I’ve been able to get on a particular flight; very upset that Hilton, PCR and Carlson don’t allow you to use their points to purchase airline tickets

  7. SPG is an Amex cc which means when Small Business Saturday rolls around (hopefully again in 2013) we have another Amex card to use. For that reason alone I would consider keeping the SPG cc in my wallet.

Thanks Daraius! I really love this post! I hope it will come back soon ^_^

  9. AMEX SPG is no longer a favorite of mine. The card has to come now with a nice 50K in order for me to move and take it.

Some of SPG’s changes (aka devaluation) were really brutal, especially in HI.

  12. Last time I open this card, they fail to honor me the 15000 bonus starpoints for spending 5k. I called several times and got different answers. I was unable to get points anyway. That SUX

  13. Looks like the 30k card is back. I just got an invitation to apply for the card(s). Can I apply for both personal and business SPG card?

  14. Thanks Darius, I applied for both and got approved the personal card over the phone and while on the phone, got an email that the business card got approved. 😀
