1. 50% Bonus on US Airways Miles Shared or Transferred from Hotels
Now through April 30, 2013 US Airways is offering a 50% bonus for sharing miles.
You can earn only 25,000 miles as a bonus, so you’re effectively paying ~2.27 cents for 1 US Air mile. So you’d have to share 50,000 miles to max out on the share mile bonus. 2.27 cents per mile is more than other US Air promotions, but it could be worth it to top off for an award.
Loyalty Lobby writes about a 50% bonus when you transfer your hotel points to US Air. US Airways hotel transfer partners include Best Western, Choice hotels, Club Carlson, LaQuinta, Marriott, Starwood, and Wyndham .
However, transfers from Starwood hotel points are not eligible for the 50% bonus.
A full list of US Airway partner airlines is here. One of the best uses of US Airways miles is to fly in Business Class from North America to Asia, with a stopover in Europe, for 90,000 US Air miles.
2. 30% Bonus on Purchases of American AAdvantage Miles
Via One Mile at a Time, American Airlines is offering a 30% bonus for purchasing at least 20,000 miles up to May 17, 2013. You get an extra 15% discount if you purchase by 12 noon CST on April 5, 2013.
With this promotion, the bonus miles varies with the level of miles purchased:
Purchase 20,000 to 29,000 Miles = Earn 5,000 Bonus Miles
Purchase 30,000 to 39,000 Miles = Earn 8,250 Bonus Miles
Purchase 40,000 to 49,000 Miles = Earn 12,000 Bonus Miles
So you get the same amount of bonus miles if you buy 40,000 or 49,000 miles. American Airlines limits you to a maximum of 60,000 purchased and gifted miles, per year (though they loosen this restriction at year end).
So the maximum number of miles you can buy via this promotion is 72,000 (60,000 purchased miles + 12,000 bonus miles).
The best option (for the lowest cost per mile) is to purchase 40,000 miles and get 12,000 extra miles (52,000 miles in total) for a total cost of $1,040.13 or ~2 cents per mile.
Buying miles at this price could make sense to top off for an award you have planned, or if you know that you will redeem for more value than what you spend. But, as always, just because something is on “sale” doesn’t mean it is a good deal!
3. Double Points for Starwood Stays
View from the Wing reports that Starwood hotel will launch a new promotion starting May 1, called the SPG Double Take.
Between May 1 and July 31, 2013, eligible stays at participating Starwood hotels (a list of exclusions can be found here) will earn double points. Also, all bookings made via the Starwood Mobile App for Android and iPhone will earn an additional bonus of 500 Starpoints.
Registration has officially not started, but you can request an update by texting “DBLT” to 44264 in the U.S., or 447950080934 in the U.K.
4. Hilton Bonus
Via Deals We Like, throughout the 2nd Quarter of 2013 (April through June) Hilton hotels is offering their Daily Grand promotion, where you can earn 1,000 points per week night stay, and 2,000 points per weekend stay.
And as Deals We Like points out, if you are booking a stay in the Middle East, in addition to Fridays and Saturdays, Thursdays also count as a weekend night, meaning that Thursdays would also earn 2,000 bonus miles.
5. Andaz Maui Accepting Reservations
Million Mile Secrets reader Cheryl (thanks!) wrote in to let me know that the Andaz in Maui, Hawaii is now accepting reservations from September 15, 2013. The Andaz is part of the Hyatt chain of hotels and a room costs ~$600 or 22,000 Hyatt points.
The Andaz is in Wailea in Maui. Emily and I stayed at the Waldorf Astroia in Maui a few weeks ago, and this part of the island seemed less busy than Kaanapali where there is a Hyatt Regency. We actually visited the construction sites (nerd alert!) and it looked like there was a lot of work still left, but hopefully it will be finished before September!
