Do You Use Your Vacation?

Best Western and Wakefield Research found that more than half of all US Travelers find it hard to use all their allocated vacation days.

My goal is to not let a single vacation day go unused!  I turned down an offer from Amazon to work with another Fortune 500 company which not only had a more generous vacation policy, but which also encouraged employees to use ALL their vacation time each year.

Sure, Amazon gave employees a small stock grant and higher pay, but I knew that I’d be unhappy with only 2 weeks of vacation in the year.  The trade-off was certainly worth it for me!

Sending Email On Vacation

Best Western also found that 55% of all employees can’t go a week without checking email, and I’m guilty of this.  But checking my email once a day – in the morning or night – actually made it easier for me to go on vacation.

That’s because folks at the office know that they don’t have to cover for my emails and I have less to do when I do get back in the office.

  1. I get 3 weeks a year and use it all. I would use more if they would give it to me 🙂

  2. I am able to save a number of days year-to-year; I am planning to use them for a big trip.

  3. I earn over 4 weeks a year and I also get to “bank” my vacation days year to year up to a certain number before I lose it… havent lost a day yet and enjoy multiple vacations a year.

  4. I definitely don’t end up using all of my vacation days. I tend to save them up for a longer trip from time to time.

  5. Yes I use all my vacation time. Company policy states that either I use it or I lose any remaining time at the end of the calendar year.

  6. I get 3 weeks a year (unfortunately that includes sick days) and normally use them all well before the year’s up.

  7. I don’t get vacation, big new wave of corporate way of doing business

  8. I have no more vacation days, all planned down to the very last minute. I have combined 2 vacation days to use over long weekends that gives me 5 day vacations! So far 10 of those vacations planned! Thank you for all the tips to make these trips viable.

  9. I always use every bit of vaca!

  10. I do have vacation but its like use it or lose it before the end of the Jan every year.
I use it always 2 weeks in a stretch.

  11. 29 days plus 5 days carried over annually plus scheduling my vacations around 8 federal holidays, yes, I most definitely use them all and still think that I don’t get enough days 🙂

  12. You better believe I use all my vacation days! Why on earth would I not???

  13. You better believe I use all my vacation days! Is my European-side showing?

  14. Always have used ALL of my vacation time!

  15. Absolutely! I’ll be leaving for a 3 week holiday soon!

  16. yes! usually running low by the holidays

  17. Jamie Schwenn Herda

I always use it all. My family is too important to waste a single day.

  18. I absolutely use it all! Always have since the first day I had paid vacation.

  19. I currently have 43 days vacation available to me… guess I should start whittling that down…

  20. I’d take more vacation…if I wasn’t deployed all the times I’d like to take it 🙁

  21. I’m in for a vacation, preferably a warm place. Argentina sounds great, right about now ! New Pope, best soccer player in the world, food and SUN !

  22. I do not use all of my vacation day. I get 4 weeks but its hard to get that amount of time off from work. I usually end using about 2 – 2 1/2 weeks a year.

  23. I can’t get enough vacation. 365 days a year sounds good to me.

  24. We work for an NGO that gives us a month of vacation every year. I think the philosophy behind that generosity is that it helps offset less-than-stellar pay, plus it is doesn’t cost our agency anything, unlike other benefits! We don’t usually take the whole month, but once we are empty-nesters we hope to travel more and make the most of our vacation time.

  25. Yes, I use as many days as I can, but also carry over some days to have a buffer for emergencies.

  26. I use every single second of my vacation time!

  27. tryingtotravel

Hope no one starts throwing stones………..but I’m a teacher so I get plenty of time off . Last summer, I worked, trained, planned for four of the 8 weeks off. The time off IS great, just not very flexible…….. almost always paying “peak” prices or points for travel.

  28. Michael Pawlik

I get three weeks a year and I use it all. I can’t imagine not using it and I would certainly love more.

  29. I always try to use them all, but end having a couple of days left over. Luckily, my company pays out unused vacation days, so it’s not a total loss.

  30. Of course! I can use more if I have them…

  31. I use as many days as I need, but 5 days I can carry over as a strategy for longer vacation planned in advance with points and miles – planning in advance is a key to get at least award direct flight.

  32. I am high school student, so – yes, I use it all (lol). I am entering here for my mom who loves to travel. All I need in airport, plane or hotel – free internet!

  33. Yes, I take it or carry over. But if it would be my boss choice, I will never take any vacation. I had the same issue in all my prior jobs too, even in another country. Is it me or just pure bad luck?

  34. I can’t carry over vacation days from year to year, so I make make sure I use them all! I get three weeks and I do my best to make them count!!

  35. Absolutely, positively, 100% YES! I dont think I could ever have too much vacation! My company allows me to buy a third week (for the cost of what I would make that week) and I think that is such a steal. I actually am about to depart for Miami on a four day vacation right now! During the work week before a vacation I always am so stressed out knowing I will be gone, then the second I finish my out of office reply in outlook, the adrenaline starts to rush! See ya work! I can guarantee I will not be checking your emails until Tuesday!

  36. I get 4 Weeks and have been carrying 15days every year, always looking to use 2-3 wks for big trip.

  37. I won’t use all of mine this year, but not for lack of trying. I can flex my schedule around most trips, and am saving days up for a long trip sometime in the next year or two.

  38. I get two weeks from the company and one week more that I “pay for” out of each pay check. Definitely need those three weeks and usually travel overseas.

  39. I ALWAYS use ALL my vacation!

  40. YES, I always use my vaca days, and usually manage to “fanagle” a few more weeks by telecommuting as well

  41. Yes, of course I do!!

  42. I get 3 weeks and use it all!

  43. I use vacation time whenever I feel like it and can make it happen – up to 6-8 weeks/year generally. However, as an owner of several companies, work will always travel with me across the globe with no regard for time zones.

  44. At my current company we get 2 weeks a year and no personal days, yet I am not always able to use all my leave due to workload and other factors.

Taking more than a week can be difficult, and like many, I find myself checking in while on vacation. I am US Midwest-based and did check in with work even from NZ and from OZ when on vacation there. But then so do my boss and most of my colleagues check in even when traveling on vacation.

I questioned my sanity for checking work email from the free wireless from the Te Papa museum in Wellington 🙂 Great city, and great museum BTW.

  45. Yes! Our days do not roll over to the next year so it’s use them or lose them. And I use them all.

  46. Scott Leffel

I get a paltry two weeks per year and it’s use-it-or-lose it, but that part doesn’t matter because I have to cunningly ration it out and plan along for my trips to coincide with company holidays and weekends to get even the basic world travel in that I want to do. Typically this means about two decent “overseas” trips per year (counting a cruise or resort stay somewhere in the Caribbean). We can also get 4 “comp days” for being on-call, and as much aggravation as that is, I use them all up too. If I could only buy vacation days or take unpaid leave I’d do that. All in all, I think I need to contemplate going self-employed again; I just have too much wanderlust for a FT desk job!

  47. I’ve always had an “academic” year–with summers off, so yes, I use my vacation. My idea of the ideal job–Saturdays, Sundays, June, July and August–all off!
