Marriott Gift Card Does Not Earn Points Towards Southwest Companion Pass

Don’t forget to follow me on  Facebook or Twitter!

Loyalty Traveler recently wrote that you can earn between 1,200 to 6,000 Southwest points for buying a Marriott gift card which you can then use when you stay at a Marriott hotel.

  • 1,200 Southwest points for a $100 Marriott Gift Card purchase
  • 3,000 Southwest points for a $250 Marriott Gift Card purchase
  • 6,000 Southwest points for a $500 Marriott Gift Card purchase

Each Southwest point is worth 1.67 cents towards wanna get away fares, so you’re effectively getting $20, $50, or $100 in Southwest points for every $100, $250 or $500 Marriott gift card you buy.

My Experience

Readers were asking if these Southwest airline points counted towards the Southwest Companion Pass and how long it took to receive the gift card and for the points to post.

I ordered a gift card on August 28, 2012.  I received the gift card in about a week, and the points posted to my Southwest account on September 15, 2012.

Unfortunately they did not count towards the Southwest Companion Pass.

But this is still a good way to reduce the cost of your Marriott hotel stays!

  1. Ordered mine on Aug 28 also but still waiting for the SW points to post. They do say to expect 4-6 weeks so I guess I’ll wait and see.

  2. Where does the charge come from? Southwest or Marriott? Need to try to get double miles for the charge (Marriott Visa?)

  3. @Paul – Perhaps it will post in a few days.

@Jimmy Clark- It came from Marriott Vacation, but it should get double points on the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

  4. If the charge is from Marriott Vacation , will using the Chase Freedom card in Q4 gives the 5% bonus .. if yes then it will be another 5000 Chase UR points for the 1000$ gift card purchase , which makes total 17,000 SW points ( after transferring chase UR to SW thru CSP or Ink)..Any way I’ll give a try with 100$ purchase

  5. @Mile Addict – I don’t know, but do let me know if you try it out!

  6. My SW points posted 09/19, maybe it helped to comment here. :)

  7. I just bought a $100 Marriott gift card using my Chase Freedom. My billing statements ends on the 6th, so I will let you guys know if I get the 5x points.

  8. @MissMiles - Please let us know. Sometimes purchases towards the end of a statement don’t earn the 5X until the next statement, but you can always send them a message to ask for the points.

  9. I called Chase today to find out if the gift cards qualify for the 5x bonus category and they told me no – only hotels stays that are PAID for at the hotel when using the Freedom card. This rep could be wrong, and I hope because I already bought one $100 gift card. My statement ends on the 7th, so I should be able to see whether I got the 5x points.

  10. @MissMiles – I’m curious too! Please let me know what happens.

  11. I got the 5x points for the marriott gift card!

  12. @MissMiles - Excellent! Thanks for sharing.
