I have to remove the link to the 30,000 point American Express Starwood credit card by the end of Tuesday, September 4, 2012.  However, the link may change or expire earlier on September 4, 2012.

I applied for both the personal and business Starwood credit card, and will use my Starwood points for cheap cash and points award stays (when available).

If you have a Starwood personal credit card, you can refer someone else for the personal card and get 5,000 extra Starpoints for every approved application.

Bottom Line:   As always, offers come and go, and I wouldn’t worry about missing this offer. The regular offer was for 25,000 points which is only 5,000 fewer points.

The Starwood 30,000 point offer has appeared twice before – once in summer 2010 and for a second time in summer 2011.  I don’t have any inside information, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it back again just like the British Airways credit card which seems to come and go with some regularity.

I’m traveling today so won’t be able to get to the comments until later!

  1. For some reason, the referal of the business card is already expired! Too bad, my wife was going to refer me and I already have the personal.

  2. Yeah, didn’t work for me either and just got this when I applied after filling out everything.

    We are sorry.

Currently, our systems are not responding. Please try again later or call us at 1-800-519-OPEN (6736) to apply for a Card. We apologize for any inconvenience.

  3. Doh, turns out I accidentally applied for the business one which I already had.
I didn’t get an automatic confirmation when applying for the personal one however the Credit Card Application Status page says

    09/04/12
STARWOOD PREFERRED GUEST CREDIT CARD(SM) FROM AMERICAN EXPRESS
    Approved
Congratulations! Your application has been approved and you should receive your new card within 7-10 days.

    Hi Daraius,

FYI -used your link a few days ago to apply for the business card and got approved. Amex is notorious for not tracking referrals properly somertimes though according to FTG. So in case you don’t get the referral, let me know and I can provide you with my info.

  5. Daraius-

Thanks for all the tips. I got my personal application in today and approved within a few hours. Is there a way to make sure you get credit for the application?

  6. I had already applied for an Amex SPG Personal for my wife last month, and then sent a referral to myself from her account, but after the ease of getting those two 30k offers, I figured I might as well try for one more card and so applied for an Amex SPG Business card for her. She was instant approved, which is cool, but then it made me think about the types of charges that would be required.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Amex can be particular about charges on a business card actually being business-related, and they can put your account under review to confirm that is the case. Am I remembering that correctly? I mean, we should be able to swing the $5k charges in 6 months, but there’s no way that all of those would be strictly business-related. Or am I worrying about nothing? 🙂

  7. Can someone please tell me whether buying amex gift card is eligible towards $5000 minimum spending? thanks.

  8. @Greg I would buy Amex gift card at grocery store so it would code as grocery purchase not gift card just to be on the safe side.

  9. Applied for both personal and business on sept 4. The personal card was approved a day later and the business card was approved on sept 11. Just got the cards and called to verify the terms of my offer and they are saying that the offer had to get approved by sept 4th in order to get the 30k. The rep filed a compaint for me for both cards… Its not the end of the world if I don’t get the extra 10k points, but I wish I had known that it need to be approved by sept 4 before I applied. Any one else have this problem? Maybe they will give me the 10k as a sign of generosity to keep me spending money with amex…

  10. Just finished a refi of a mortgage so can now apply for a new card. Was going to do the SPG Business Card but noticed it doesn’t seem to give the 2 free stays / 5 free nights credit for elite status like the SPG Personal Card. Is that right?
