I don’t fly a lot for work, so airline elite status (free bags, ability to jump lines, bonus miles etc.) doesn’t matter to me.  I’d rather have hotel elite status instead because I spend more time in hotels than in planes!

United Status Match

United Status Match

But for those of you who do like airline elite status, via Frequently FlyingUnited is offering to match your existing airline entry and mid-tier status to their Premier Silver, Premier Gold, and Premier Platinum.  However, they won’t match your existing Star Alliance Gold or Silver status.

Unfortunately, this promotion doesn’t match you to United’s top tier Global Services and 1K status either.

This status match challenge is a bit restrictive and you have to fly a certain amount of miles or segments within 3 months to retain your matched United status.  If you don’t complete the minimum requirements, you lose the matched status.

You have to complete the required flying on flights operated by United, Continental, United Express or Copa Airlines.  This means that flights on Star Alliance partners (Lufthansa, Swiss etc.) won’t count!

You can’t take part if you have previously matched your status to United or Continental in the last 5 years.

And you don’t get access to Star Alliance lounges and certain other partner airline benefits immediately.

I could match my American Airline lifetime Gold status to United, but since I don’t have any United flights in the next 90 days, it doesn’t make sense for me to do so.

Bottom Line:  This could be worth considering for those of you that do fly a lot and would like to try elite status at United.

  1. Note that this match is once in 5 years

  2. I’m trying to figure out what to do. I have US Platinum status which is about to turn to dust. Well, I suppose Air France Gold and V Australia Platinum are ok for DL lounge access but I’m not even sure DL will match me in a challenge so I’d still end up dirt otherwise. Argh. What to do…

  3. Has anyone been able to get United to make it happen yet? I submitted mine on 1/31 but am yet to hear back…Would be interested in knowing if anyone has received the match successfully or if you have an idea on how long the process might take…

I travelled on UA/CO earlier today – it would have been nice to use that towards my challenge…

  4. I submitted mine on 1/28 and have yet to hear anything back. I’ve flown 4 (will be 5 tomorrow) segments since then. So frustrating!

  5. My status match took about 3 weeks to come thru (that was in December).
I was lucky and got it the day before my first flight.

  6. I have been waiting 3+ weeks to hear on UA Platinum challenge, just auto response on email inquiries. Leave tomorrow for Asia tour, frustrating and will book balance of trip on AA if I don’t hear before I leave tomorrow. Worth the change fee for the miles and status.

  7. Can I ask united to put my status match on hold. I requested my status match last month but my work plans changed and will not be able to fulfill the requirements. All my travel is booked for late August and September. My challenge ends August 10th
