Breaking News – She Said “Yes!”

Trip Report Index:

On Saturday, at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich (just outside London), I asked Emily to marry me.  We’ve been together for ~4 years, and often get mistaken for a long-time happily married couple.

I was in the UK on work, but asked Emily to visit me over the weekend (thanks to American Airline miles).  It was her first trip to London and she was very excited to visit!

Emily & Daraius in London

The Prime Meridian at Greenwich which divides the earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres was the perfect place for a marriage proposal.

  • Emily’s parents are from the US and my parents are from India.  What better place for an East meets West union than at the Prime Meridian?
  • Emily and I both love to travel, so what better place to start our lives together than at the junction of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres?

East meets West!

I had rehearsed my lines, and alone inside Flamsteed House (built in 1675 for the first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed), I got on one knee and told her why I needed to be with her for the rest of my life.

And even though I had practiced my lines, they didn’t quite come out in the order I had planned.  But I think I managed to get the basic message across, because after what must have been the lonnnnngest milliseconds she said yes!

After the proposal, we went on one of those tourist buses for a few hours and got on and off at the sites in London including Westminster Abbey and The Tower of London.  In the evening, we went to see Wicked the musical (which Emily had been wanting to see for years) and had a late dinner before getting up early for our flight back to Kansas yesterday.

The weather in London was gorgeous.  It was 29 degrees C (84 F) in London, and the hottest day ever recorded in the UK in October.  We were so lucky!

I slacked off with the blog last week (some things are just more important than miles and points!), but will be back to regular posts this week.  I’ll also reply to your comments and emails over the next few days.

  11. My wife and I were married at the Queen’s House, just down the hill from the Observatory, in May 1997, in part because we both had read and enjoyed Dava Sobel’s “Latitude” while we were dating. We walked up the hill between the ceremony and the reception. At the time there was a sign at the meridian saying “The Future Starts Here”. Good luck to you.
